Thirty thousand kilometres. That’s how far JL2579 has to travel to get to the edge of Minecraft--more than twice the diameter of Earth. You can watch him do it live, right here.
Unlike Kurt J. Mac, who is walking to the end of Minecraft via Let’s Play-esque videos, JL2579 is riding a minecart to the end of Minecraft — and he’s doing it live on Twitch.
Having spent the last hour or so watching it, it’s one of the chillest things I’ve seen in recent memory thanks in part to the constant motion, pretty sights, and good music:
Currently, the cart is travelling at 20m/second — that’s why it will take him 17 days to reach the end of Minecraft.
Curious as to how he’s doing this? From his Twitch’s FAQ page:
I set up command blocks to clone a template bridge pillar in the spawnchunks in front of the last bridge pier when a minecart would ride over them. I also added some fancy overhang and Mountain detection to add tunnel segments when the track goes through an Extreme Hill. Then I let several instances of Minecraft run from different starting points at the same time with the help of some friends from zipkrowd, and together we were able to generate the chunks within few days.
The rails and the world are therefore pregenerated, because the terrain and the bridge generation caused massive lag and would have ruined the smooth ride 🙂

No, he won’t press f3, that would ruin the view, and the view is the reason for the stream
There is a death ray in front of the minecart, no animals will turn him around
Lava and water will not be on the track, it is pregenerated
The track is pregenerated

There’s some really interesting Twitch streams popping up lately. Twitch plays [insert game], this. Quite cool to see people thinking outside the box and doing some different stuff on Twitch.

Twice the diameter of the Earth isn’t really a meaningful comparison. Being 3/4 of the Earth’s circumference is though. So is the fact that it’s the same as walking around Mercury’s equator twice.
I ‘get it’ at the same time as I ‘dont get it’.
