On paper this week is one of the worst weeks of game releases in the goddamn history of recorded time. But you know what? There are actually some really interesting, relatively unknown games coming out on Steam. This might be as good a time as any to totally experiment.
I’m thinking about trying out a couple of these games that are completely off my radar — like Claire, 4PM, Retrobooster and Whispering Willows. These are games I didn’t even know existed until 20 minutes ago. Sure, you might get burned, sure they might terrible. Sure you might go bankrupt and starve — but what do you have to lose, right?
4PM (PC)
What is it? Self describes itself as a short narrative experience.
Should you care? If that floats your boat (it floats mine) then it could be worth checking out. It looks fantastic form a visual standpoint.
Claire (PC)
What is it? This is a retro-styled 2D horror game that does some fairly interesting things visually.
Should you care? I only learned about the existence of this game 10 seconds ago, but I’m intrigued by this. It looks extremely dark and almost thoughtful.
Ratchet & Clank Trilogy (PS Vita)
What is it? It’s the Ratchet & Clank Trilogy. On PS Vita. And this is the worst description ever.
Should you care? I think the PS Vita is the perfect home for something like this.
Retrobooster (PC)
What is it? Oh this looks interesting. It’s like a top-down shooter that looks really, really hard.
Should you care? Another game I didn’t know existed until 10 seconds ago. This looks right up my alley (I’ve never understood that idiom, but here I am, totally using it).
Stained (PC)
What is it? Another 2D platformer with puzzle elements.
Should you care? Looks alright I suppose. Apparently does a lot more than most 2D platformers with puzzle elements.
Three Dead Zed (PC)
What is it? A zombie platform puzzle thing where you control a zombie with three distinct forms. I’m guessing you switch forms to solve puzzles and whatnot.
Should you care? This actually looks nice, with hand drawn HD visuals. Hardly a must buy, but worth checking out at least.
Whispering Willows (PC)
What is it? A horror/adventure puzzle game with an absolutely gorgeous aesthetic.
Should you care? It might be one of the best releases in one of the worst weeks for games ever.
The Terrian Saga: KR-17 (PC)
What is it? Not a 16-bit retro styled 2D platformer… A 32-bit retro styled 2D platformer. This game is original.
Should you care? This actually looks interesting. Looks like there is a fair amount of depth in the mechanics. It also has a very cool trailer.
Wii Sports Club (Wii U)
What is it? You might remember me from such consoles as ‘The Wii’.
Should you care? Nah. Get Nintendo Land instead. That game rules.

If we’re starving, then weight. ^_^
technically muscle mass first 🙂
You realise that muscle mass actually weighs something, right?
So he is correct, you’ll lose weight – he didnt specify if it was muscle, fat, skin, hair etc
I used to love them but I am so over “retro-styled 2D platformers”
I didn’t know there was a new sports Wii U title. That image of the tennis takes me back – so much nostalgia.
Now with better controls, a bit more depth, and online play.
I suppose the extra surface area of the new game pad makes it easier to hit the ball?
Now I just need a wrist strap for my gamepad.
It’d be nice if these were links, save me that 5 seconds of googling to find their site.
Ratchet & Clank is available digitally already and is CrossBuy with the PS3 digital versions.
Currently in the middle of R&C1 and whilst there are some minor bugs with the game, also slight input lag (mainly with movement), the game still holds up well.
Looking forward to finishing the first asap to start on the later games which were so much better.
I was on vita this morning and didn’t see it anywhere
Sorry about that, seems like that fixed their error, when they store was published last week all three games were available via the Search option as that was the EU release date. As a previously owner of the PS3 digital version, they all came up Free for me.
I’ve just looked on both the Vita and Webstore now and I can’t see them anymore. Seems like the wait is back on.
I think you were right the first time Mark “one of the worst weeks of game releases in the goddamn history of recorded time” (sorry for misquoting you).
Episode 5 of The Wolf Among Us should probably get a mention, shouldn’t it? I know that’s what I’ll be playing Friday night.
No new releases = excellent time for tackling the Steam/GOG/console backlog.
Mario Kart 8 Gentlemen. Mario Kart 8.
I have two brand new Riddick games and Reus. To me, they are new releases. 🙂
Must say Reus is a very interesting game. It can feel a bit grindy now and then, but I’m really enjoying it.
