An old Nintendo character guide lets us know all sorts of things about Mario and his Mushroom Kingdom friends. Like the fact that Bowser invaded Princess Peach’s sovereignty because he can’t stand the thought of ‘happy fungi’.
Over the last 24 hours, writer Blake Harris — who penned the excellent Console Wars book — has been sharing tidbits from a 1993 character guide published by Nintendo to help licensors and other companies use their characters correctly. It’s full of weird tidbits about characters we’ve been playing as for two decades.
Like the fact that Peach’s magic powers keep her clothes clean, for example.
And a lovely princess for @DragmireG and @JALinTO… pic.twitter.com/t4X97VJQQ7

Bowser ain’t got no friends. The other Koopas apparently hate their ruler.

Mario might not even be human, guys. He’s categorized as ‘Homo Nintendonus’ on this Yoshi page. Maybe he’s a mutant?
Wait, Yoshi’s real name is T. Yoshisaur Munchakoopas??!! pic.twitter.com/ObgEnoiLAG

Mario is tolerant and open-minded though. And the explanation why is great.

And if you’ve ever wondered what the exact Pantone colours are for the iconic plumber, the guide covered that too.

That’s, pretty cool.
So bowser learns magic,…………….. hold on POWERFUL DARK MAGIC, WHY DON’T WE SEE THIS, I MEAN IF NINTENDO HAD HIM AND GANON TO SUMMON GIYGAS iN A FUTURE SMASH BROS STORY MODE, my goodness we just learnt about it
We do already see this. All those bricks and everything in the Mushroom kingdom? Those are its residents. He turned them into that.
D’oh, *remembers game thoeries 2 part episode called mario is a psycho* so that means mario has unknowingly been causing GENOCIDE to the people he was supposed to protect by smashing those bricks that were people. Thanks mario for unknowingly causing genocide
Depends how you look at it. Were they even alive any more once they got turned into bricks, or did that process kill them already? Chances are Bowser already did the genocide, Mario was just wading his way through the corpses.
…and some residents had left him items to help him defeat bowser like mushrooms, fire flowers, etc.
Trust the fungus!
Im more wondering about Mario being “homo nintendonus” and why that needed to be mentioned…
Inappropriate use of apostrophes. In an official guide.
