I get the impression that Sony, Microsoft and Activision reeeeally want you to buy a new console. Activision has announced a cross-buy deal in which all PS3/Xbox 360 digital purchases of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare will also net you the PlayStation 4/Xbox One version as well.
This applies to all purchased DLC (season passes included) and any stats you might rack up — it all transfers over.
Once you have the game, you need only enter a code that comes with it to claim your other version. The deal will expire at the end of March 2015, so keep that in mind if you like sitting on codes for months on end or your birthday is in April (like mine!) or something.

Even if you were planning to just get the X1 version you are better of doing this especially if the 360 version happens to be cheaper.
Will all the versions cost the same? I’m not interested in the game at all, but so far cross gen games have generally been $10 or so cheaper for the last gen

Although the article is kinda misleading… it states that it is for Digital purchases, this is something that have recently done with Destiny also (Buy digital for the PS360 version to the end of January to get the upgrade)
If in fact this also carries to the physical version, then this is unlikely to work as they will use the same feature as they did when the new consoles launched and that is the old gen disk needed to be in the console to validate the digital version…
Nope. If they really did they wouldn’t be releasing a last-gen version at all.
More likely encouraging upgrades without ruining their own profit.
exactly, it’s not an act of desperation – it’s just a smart business move
if the buyer only has a 360/ps3, there is added incentive to buy a new gen console. if the incentive is successful, microsoft/sony get a console sale + likely future game purchases at the expense of one game – and at the same time activision benefits by cannibilising its player base on the old gen over time.
if the buyer doesnt get a new console, then theres no loss.
