For example, the grass colour changes. Along with everything else. Four years is a long time.
The world file belongs to redditor bmach, who shared it on the r/minecraft subreddit yesterday, showing off what his first map looked like after four years’ worth of building and terraforming (using a combination of actual in-game building, and the third-party editing tools MCEdit and Worldpainter).
bmach created the comparison album after accidentally coming across an old collection of Alpha screenshots. To demonstrate the changes, he stood on the exact same spot as in the old shots, taking a screenshot while facing the same direction. You can really tell it’s the evolution of the same map on a few of the comparisons:
In others, not so much:
You can find the original, unedited screenshots below. Hunting for references to and stuff left over from the old map is pretty fun.

Actually does not look like the same 2 land masses at all. And I am not talking about terra forming it, just that I think they are 2 seperate maps. otherwise it seems he has filled in lakes and placed completely random little lakes nowhere near anything and for what seems to be no purpose. I could be wrong but if you overlaid the 2 maps together I doubt anything at all is there. Even the smallest bit of land.
Shenanigans!
I just read the reddit thread. He used cheats and WorldPainter :\ So nothing amazing here at all, IMHO.
Maybe it’s nostalgia blinding me, but I personally prefer the Alpha grass texture, wish it would be brought back in a super rare biome or something. That said, the game has improved and changed so much since Alpha, and it’s still one of my favorite games ever made.
Damn. There I was, achieving things on a Saturday, and now I’m going to throw the new Joe Rogan podcast on and go underground for a few hours.
Thanks a lot, Kotaku.
Yeah world builders and editing programs. Anotherwords shortcuts and cheats. No thanks. Probably me just being bitter cos I had anpower outage last night and lost a world. Strangely enough it reverted to the default world state, very odd…
