Back in the dark days, when Australia had no R18+ classification, we had to endure a terribly borked version of Left 4 Dead 2 after the game was initially refused classification. This annoyed David Lawrence Doe and Chris Prior so much that the pair started Gamers 4 Croydon, running directly against the man holding back R18+ at the time, Michael Atkinson.
The Gamers 4 Croydon campaign ended up being one of the pivotal points of the battle for an adult classification for games in Australia. They lost the election, but ultimately won the war after Atkinson resigned. We wrote a full blown retrospective on the campaign which you can read here.
Now Gabe Newell and Valve have paid tribute to the Gamers 4 Croydon movement using the game that started it all: Left 4 Dead 2.
We really appreciate your work for the Australian gaming community. Please see the attached image. This will be going into the game next week. Pretty impressive what you were able to accomplish.
Thanks,
Gabe
Honestly — how cool is that?

Great stuff! Much respect to Gabe and Gamers 4 Croydon.
Is there a patch to uncensor the console versions of the game? Because if there is, I’ll go out and buy a copy right now.
Nope.
Just edit your post to say “Nope” problem solved!
😀
i doubt it… you cant change a rating on a physical game sold years ago… it would now contradict the original rating… digitral on the other hand is a dif story
They did it for GTA.
oh really? comment withdrawn!
thought that would cause some legal issues but i guess not!
Well they banned the game and pulled it from stores. Happened to GTA3 and San Andreas. Then they re-released the game.
That is awesome. Valve being classy.
Nice touch.
Cockles Warmed.
Hmmm there are THREE lines in that new graffiti…
you know what that confirms……
(lol, someone had to do it hehe)
On a more serious note, I just happened to play this with 3 mates just last night, still a really fun game for sure. Especially with the now uncensoring. That was really the only thing that turned us off L4D2 and kept us playing L4D was the un-holy censoring in 2, now it’s gone, happy days.
Left 4 Dead 3!
Portal 3.
….DotA 3?
*scratches head*
FULL CONSEQUENCES 3!
No no no. It’s Team Fortress 3.
My wife and I signed the petition and became members of Gamers 4 Croydon when they were in Rundle Mall back when this first all started, I’ll have to show her this, she’ll be pretty chuffed. Still got the Gamers 4 Croydon sticker!
So very awesome. I didn’t really like Left4Dead but happy that a game inspired this change after years of disappointment.
I just wish the first game I wanted that was banned was better than Phantasmagoria. Okay, I wasn’t 18, but still.
Very awesome from the Valved Ones.
Now I have to go find my Gamers 4 Croydon coffee mug…
Gamers4 Croydon I remember them… they definitely won the unemployed gamer vote
