Best Buy in the US cancelled a number of pre-orders for the limited edition Majora’s Mask 3DS, informing customers via email that the demand had “exceeded the quantities made available” to the retailer.
The 3DS, which has been in hot demand since Nintendo announced it last week, went up for sale on Best Buy’s website last Wednesday evening and was sold out within an hour. Apparently they offered too many. Earlier this week, Best Buy issued a number of cancellations for customers who had ordered more than one system each, but clearly that wasn’t enough to meet all of the orders they took.
Best Buy is offering $US50 discounts to customers whose orders were axed. Here’s the email they sent out tonight:
Hello [NAME]
We’re sorry but there is an issue with your pre-order. The popularity of Nintendo 3DS XL Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask Limited Edition Gold/Black exceeded the quantities made available to Best Buy. As a result, we are unable to fulfil all of the pre-orders received. We regret that your particular order has been canceled and we know that this is disappointing. We want to make it up to you by offering a $US50 discount that may be used towards the purchase of one of these alternate options, or other products on BestBuy.com:
– Nintendo – 3DS XL – Black SKU: 2306021
– Nintendo – 3DS XL – Red SKU: 2307075
Meanwhile, I’ve been regularly updating this post with where and when you can get your hands on one of these systems, so if your order was cancelled and you want to try your luck again, keep an eye on that page. Last we heard, GameStop still had a few in stock, though that may have changed by the end of today.

Meanwhile EB in AU is getting a second shipment in March. This is probably the only time we’re not getting totally screwed over.
We also got the New 3DS before America – or anyone except Japan. No chargers, though.
I bought a charger from EB Games…
and I will use the one I have from my DS or original 3DS. I am glad I don’t have to pay more money to have an included charger I don’t need to add to the pile.
American Zelda fans got screwed the last couple of releases. Their Hyrule Warriors Limited Edition (the one with the scarf) was sold at one store in the country (the NYC Nintendo Experience). Even then, Nintendo screwed that up by handing out more wristbands for those waiting in the launch line than there were copies.
They’re still getting refunds, right? It sounds stupid to cancel a $200 -$250 (I don’t know how much it is) console order and only give the customer a $50 discount.

Honestly, knowing some companies, I wouldn’t be surprised if they bullshitted a reason that they couldn’t give a refund.

If these scalper piece of shits didn’t do this then the people who want them could probably get one.
Yeah, I happened to visit the EB Games website while the first shipment was available to order and thought about picking one up to resell but in the end I didn’t enjoy the thought of someone missing out or potentially having to pay much more just because I wanted to make a few hundred bucks profit. The real villain here is Nintendo. Fair enough if they underestimate demand, but what is to stop them manufacturing further batches in the future?
They are doing a second batch so I guess kudos to Nintendo this time. Though it should of been one per customer to make these scalpers work harder to get more than one. Same for Amiibos etc. People need to stop buying it so these scalpers have no more incentive.
Quite the screw up, but I would be totally happy with 50 bucks off a 3DS.
I’d especially be happy with $50 USD off a USD priced New 3DS XL, would land it at around $130
