Well there’s a headline I never thought I’d write. What a strange goal.
But that’s precisely what’s happening Riot Games wants to dump a statue of a League Of Legends champion into the sea, and if you play your cards right, the summoner name could be on that statue.
It took me a really long time to figure out precisely what’s going on, but I’m going to try my very best to explain. This is complicated. Okay, here goes.
So Riot Games is hosting an event in Australia. That event is called ‘Ocean Week’. Ocean Week is a challenge to Australian and New Zealand players. The challenge works thusly…
Between the 23rd and 31st of January 12 champions will be on rotation. If you manage to win a match using one of these specific heroes your receive one single point. If you manage to get three points then you qualify to get your summoner’s name on the statue.
Which League of Legends champion gets to ‘be’ the statue? Apparently it’ll go down to a server-wide vote between Nautilus, Fizz, and Nami.
This might be the weirdest marketing stunt I’ve seen. Actually, it probably comes second to the time Nintendo took a chunk out of the Big Banana at Coff’s Harbour for Donkey Kong Country Returns.
For those of you worrying about the environmental impact of dropping a bloody statue into the ocean, worry not. The statue is actually going to be made from artificial reef and won’t impact its surroundings negatively.
“We’ve been working with a marine biologist and an artificial reef company to make sure we create something that is good for the environment and means something to players,” explained Mirko Gozzo, Country Manager for Riot Games Oceania.
So if you’ve ever wanted to have your name on a statue, then have that statue sunk to the bottom of the sea for all eternity, NOW IS THE TIME!

What about the time Activision asked someone to change their name to TUROK for a year so they could win some junk?
I think putting advertising on a gravestone beats even that.
I think Bethesda did something similar with asking a couple to name a newborn dovakin. If I remember correctly
Neat dive site!
Or when they tried to make shadow man tombstones..
