Do you have a favourite female character in anime? Maybe you’ll find her in the results of this Japanese poll. Maybe not!
Website Charapedia recently published the results of its questionnaire that asked ten thousand anime fans which woman in anime they thought was cool. This wasn’t a poll for cutesy anime characters! But rather, for strong, powerful women in anime.
Out of those polled, 51 per cent of the participants were women and 49 per cent were men. A whopping 74.7 per cent were in their teens and 20s, while the rest were age 30 and up.
Below, you can see the top twenty choices with the number of votes.

No Eva? No thank you.
These sorts of polls really need to not include the last year at any point, so many flavour of the month animes. I really enjoyed Psycho Pass, but objectively speaking Akane is not nearly on the same level as the major or Haman Karn as far as characters go
was expecting to see misato somewhere at least
No Deunan Knute either, i would have thought that would be an automatic inclusion
Here is your regular reminder that most of these “Japanese polls” are the result of token effort from magazines, TV shows and the such to just get some numbers (often with the aim of supporting a starting bias). Sample size goes infrequently beyond 200 people and there’s little to no diversity among the polled people. In other words, these results are bs.
That doesn’t stop us from using them as a vehicle for heated discussion. 🙂
Eg: Oh my god, Saber from Fate series? How can you pick Saber when Rin is right there and undoubtedly a stronger personality!?
(Or, as my favourite exchange poorly-remembered from the Pain & Gain movie:
“You wanna go get a drink?”
“Actually, I’m sober.”
“That’s cool, the drink is just an excuse, let’s go hang out.”)
I’d have voted for Faye Valentine and Misato Katsuragi.
Motoko isn’t #1…. Poll must be incorrect 😛
Yeah, also no Kaichou wa Maid-sama.
Yep. That list is pretty spot on.
Where’s Faye Valentine?
Kurau from Kurau: Phantom Memories isn’t on the list. I won’t insist that she gets top place, but she beats Misaka hollow. (Seriously, a secret agent who can fly and walk through walls due to her symbiosis with an intelligent alien life form is hard to beat.)
There’s always a degree to which these things are popularity contests. Any heroine is effectively scaled by the popularity of the anime and how well remembered it is.
None of the females in Sword art online (any season) deserves to be on this list. They all became crying damsel’s in distress at the sight of the “complex, emotional but brave” male lead….The author took a great cast and just shat all over it.
Contrary to the opinions of certain people simply being a damsel does not a bad character make.
WTF, no Faye Valentine from Cowboy Bebop? This list is automatically illegitimate.
No Misato?
My votes would be for Faye Valentine (Bebop), Kagura (Gintama) and Motoko Kusinagi (GITS) and only because, all three of these ladies get what they want, no questions asked.
Deunan Knute from Appleseed is conspicuously missing also
so good to see Revy in the list, Black Lagoon is a great series.
No Faye or Ed, Fujiko at 17 and the Major at 5th? Rabble rabble rabble rabble!
No Lina Inverse? She was one of the original female anti-heros in anime.
No Misato? Fans have no idea.
Ferris (The Legend of Legendary Heroes) always gets left out. D=
Yuno (The Future Diary) is probably a little of the crazy side for this list. Then again, she’s no more or less brutal than Revy.
