Video: Why would someone cosplay as a zombie Stormtrooper? For the kids, of course. The folks behind Cosplay Boom talk to the person behind this gory get-up as part of a new documentary series about Star Wars fan culture.

Because they’re an actual thing in the now defunct Star Wars literary canon, ‘death troopers’.

The blurb from ‘Death Troopers’:
You know, I was annoyed when all the expanded universe I read as a teenager was scrapped and relegated to “legend” or “myth” status, but suddenly I’m not so bothered.
Yeah some of it was definitely out there, or just plain stupid. Such as the dropping a moon on Chewbacca. The expanded U ended up being a complete mess towards the end.
Legacy and Fate yes. Up to that point, not that bad. I enjoyed NJO though so we may disagree there
Highlight for me was the X-wing series.
That’s why I’m hyped for the first spin off movie hoping it’s X-wing novel like. If it’s half as good as some of those books it could be absolutely brilliant.
I think Vector Prime aka The One Where They Killed Chewbacca was the last one I read. I didn’t even quit because I was mad about that or anything, I just outgrew the books since they were really written for a young adult audience and I didn’t feel like sinking money into them anymore.
There are so many that came out after that that I’m happy to simply put it behind me. On reflection I’m glad I read the Thrawn trilogy and some of the X-Wing stories were quite good but when you’re reading about a lightsaber-shaped death star that blows itself up due to cheap construction, and a plant full of rancor-riding force-witches that is the B-plot in a story mostly about some exotic prince trying to seduce Leia away from Han, you need to take a step back and wonder what the point is.
Then they got to zombie stormtroopers and said “yeah, let’s print that”.
I didn’t mind dropping a moon on Chewie – I thought that was a pretty good way to go out and I liked the idea of the Vong war, the universe needed a new threat. But towards the end of that and how they handled the 2 Solo boys, well…they just lost the plot a bit (pun intended).
Kevin J Anderson ruins everything.
Because, why wouldn’t they?
Zombies are good.
Storm troopers are good.
Zombie + Stormtrooper = Pretty Good
Plus, with no pulse, maybe they can actually aim now…
So… zombies have super-teeth to bite through armour now?
Rakghouls were fine, but now that space fantasy’s just gotten silly.
Why not?
I’m no dedicated cosplayer. Nor do I even really have any involvement in the scene apart from seeing cool costumes and admittedly sometimes lack there off and being very impressed.
In a world already filled with zombies, a Zombie Stormtrooper has a place without question.
I’m not educated on the deeper lore involved in the Star Wars universe so today I learned that they were actually a thing. So that’s cool. Just so we’re clear though, I’m also one who refuses to recognise any but A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi as true Star Wars films.
P.s. Skyrim is great with lightsabers!
