Gearing up for the release of Mortal Kombat X, Netherrealm Studios has released a trailer featuring four-armed DLC brawler Goro. Yet all I can see is this. A claymation monster amidst digitised humans in the original Mortal Kombat, it was Goro’s alien nature that made him so intimidating to fledgling fighting game fans. If these were all real actors, then what the hell is that?
He actively frightened me in the arcades. He was intimidating — one of the greatest video game bad guys ever.
Then came the 1995 movie. Mortal Kombat to this day remains one of the best video game movies ever made, but it did several things wrong, one of them Goro. The build up to his reveal, the strange beast lurking in the shadows, that was cool. The suit they built in order to have an actor portray him? That was incredible.
They even had him kill that one disposable guy! How awesome was that?
But when it’s finally time for our major baddie to take on one of the movie’s heroes?
Wah-wahhhh.
One of the most skilled fighters in several different realms is reduced to a nutshot gag. He flails wildly after Johnny Cage and gets kicked off a cliff. At least in the film novelization Goro drops himself from the cliff rather than suffer the indignity of having it done to him.
And now we’ve got a good look at DLC Goro for this month’s Mortal Kombat X.
Nope, I’ve lost that loving feeling.

You read the film novelization?
I find it hard to believe there even WAS a film novelization, let alone that anybody actually read it.
I always felt that the movie version was out of proportion, he either needed to be shorter or broader. Broader would have been ideal as he is meant to be tall also, but in the film he seemed awkward.
I don’t have a problem with Goro in MKX, what exactly do you feel has been lost? As for the nut punch gag, it is Cages signature move. Would have been nice to see it followed up by more decent fighting before he went off the cliff though
don’t like the half-man half-dragon thing, I thought he was just a specific race that had 4 arms and liked to punch stuff a lot. and maybe my memory is foggy but I thought you couldn’t nut punch him in MK1
The elite class of the Shokan race are half human half dragon, there is also the half tiger half human low class of Shokan
thanks for clearing that up.
HE GOT PUNCHED IN THE BALLS… HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAH BUT HE GOT PUNCHED IN THE BALLS!!!
Coming Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday nights at 7pm, HE GOT PUNCHED IN THE BALLS!!!
FOOTBALL IN THE CROTCH! FOOTBALL IN THE CROTCH!
This week on OW MY BALLS!
Funny thing is that johnny cages nut punch never worked on goro in the original or on shao khan either suggesting that they both had no balls
Or Duke Nukem-like balls of steel.
Whaaat? As if Johnny Cage would -not- punch him in the balls! Those were $500 sunglasses, asshole!
I wish I could upvote this twice.
God damn, can Mike Fahey write one, ONE, article about a fighting game without finding some way to crap on it?
