Surprise! The thing absolutely nobody was expecting happened: some Dead or Alive players on PC have modded the latest game so they can play with naked characters. NSFW content ahead.
Earlier this year, Dead or Alive 5: Last Round director Yohei Shimbori told MCV that Team Ninja, the developers behind the game, would “like to ask PC users to play our game in good moral and manner. Otherwise, [Team Ninja] won’t be able to release a title for PC again.” But when the game in question involves scantily-clad characters, it was really just a matter of time before someone figured out how to change the textures on the characters to be more revealing, right? Maybe I’m just cynical.
Either way, about 24 hours (!) after the release of Dead or Alive 5 on PC, there were already nudity mods for the game — like these ones, by lustfulillumination:
Undoubtedly there are other nudity mods floating around by now, along with more conventional mods, like ones that improve the graphics or change the appearance of the fighters.
Curiously, a few players have reported that Koei Tecmo is using copyright claims to take down YouTube videos of Dead or Alive mods — and it doesn’t matter whether or not they include nudity:
Koei Tecmo did not respond to requests for comments in time for publication. For now, it’s worth noting that the game launched on PC with quite a few missing features. Additionally, in 2005, Tecmo tried to file a lawsuit against modders who rendered characters in Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball naked. It’s unclear whether or not Koei Tecmo will take a similarly harsh stance on modding in 2015, but we will keep you updated as we learn more.

Confirmed, on account of the video directly beneath it having been taken down
You mean the screenshot of a taken down video?
Alright totally my bad for not checking that properly. Thought it was an embedded link
Can’t wait for their “We’re taking our stuff, going home and never coming back to PC!” press release.
That was for people releasing the DLC content as mods – not for altering characters. It was a mistranslation no body bothered to correct because the mistranslation got them tons of clicks.
Of course this was going to happen
Never underestimate modders.
Every time these games get a bit more skeevy, people accuse Team Ninja of being perverts but it turns out that it’s exactly what the fans of this series want.
I love nudity.
Same. What’s the big deal and why is it considered “immoral”?
Queen Victoria.

Ah, of course. Victorian morality. Back when hanging was also considered moral. I think, much like with other facets of society, we can revise what is and isn’t moral in 2015?
Threatening your customers, and then presenting them with a horrible port of your product anyway, isn’t exactly a smart way to generate a positive rapport.
I for one welcome our new bare-titted overlords.
I’m hanging out for the modded version of the PS4 port, the lack of soft engine in the PS3 port is really letting these modders down.
I click on the link and BAM! “The website is temporarily unable to service your request as it exceeded resource limit. Please try again later.” Looks like nudity is a popular thing.
It’s refreshing to see that nude mods only become an issue worthy of Kotaku’s scorn when it offers them a chance to dump on fighting games. When it’s in Dragon Age, it’s funny. When it’s in Skyrim, it’s funny. But when it’s in Dead Or Alive…
This is far from the first instance of nude mods in a game, fighting or otherwise, and almost certainly won’t be the last; why else, other than it being a chance to further alienate a scapegoat demographic, would it suddenly be news now?
