Oh, and no announcements about Nintendo’s quality of life platform. Guess you’ll just have to be content with 3DS and Wii U news!
At Nintendo’s recent investors meeting, company honcho Satoru Iwata was asked specific details on the upcoming home console that’s codenamed Nintendo NX (for example, the investor wanted to know if the “N” in “NX” meant “Nintendo”). Earlier this spring, when Iwata first announced work had begun on the console, he said the new system wouldn’t be fully revealed until 2016. Sounds like he meant it!
“We do not plan on talking specifics about the the NX until 2016,” Iwata said again during the investors meeting. Explaining why the announcement was made so early, Iwata said he didn’t want people to think the smart device collaboration with DeNA meant that Nintendo was abandoning home gaming systems.
“Presently, we cannot talk about the time period when it [the NX] will go on sale or what it’s like,” Iwata said. “Because we are calling it a ‘new concept,’ we are not thinking of this as a ‘simple replacement’ for the 3DS or the Wii U.”
Iwata has previously been vague when discussing the Nintendo NX.
Since this year is 2015 and this year’s E3 gaming expo takes place in, well, 2015, do not expect Nintendo to talk about the NX. Don’t expect announcements about smart device games, either.
“Incidentally, we’re getting various questions for this year’s E3, like ‘Won’t there be a NX announcement?’, ‘Will there be a presentation on smart devices?’, or ‘Will there be more on the quality of life platform?’ However, since we understand that E3 is an event for dedicated video game machines, we do not intend to discuss the smart devices as well as quality of life.”
Here again, Iwata repeated that even if there are expectations for a Nintendo NX announcement at E3, details won’t be revealed until 2016. At least, there aren’t plans for such a presentation.

So, a bit like how the DS was to be the third pillar of Nintendo, to be a thing along side their “Gameboy” line and their home consoles, replacing neither?
Unless it’s radically different, I on’t see it happening, sorry Ninty.
Well, every time Iwata says he wont mention anything about the NX he inadvertently drops some hints. First, he mentions not worrying about Nintendo abandoning home consoles, and so we can see that the NX is NOT merely Nintendo’s next handheld (which is what some have been speculating).
Furthermore, he says that it’s not a simple replacement for the Wii U or 3DS. This gives more credence to the Nintendo Fusion theory of a home console mixed with handheld. However, it could also mean that the console will be ultra gimmicky and ultimately another Virtual Boy…
You mean totally awesome and underappreciated? 😛
As it is, the Wii U is pretty much already a console crossed with a handheld as it is, it’d likely just be an extension of that.
They also said that the ds and Wii were “ultra gimmicky”…
There’s a difference between being gimmicky but actually a decent console regardless, and being gimmicky, clunky and sacrificing the ability to display more than 2 colours just for the sake of the gimmick.
Funny how the virtual boy was derided in it’s time (and for good reason, no machine should cause instant headaches). The technology however has matured and people are all more than willing to try Oculus and similar products. I wonder if people will remember this was tried 20 years ago.
All this talk of the NX is silly. Can we speculate on the X2 and PS5?
Nintendo simply said “Although we are making some games for mobiles, we are still making consoles, the new one is under way”. Which would be true of Sony and MS too. The only difference is Nintendo announced the internal codename.
Cool if it’s a Nintendo phone. I’d buy it cc @shiggyninty
Who am I kidding, I will buy whatever it is.
I’d fling my iPhone out into the ocean the day the Nintendo phone came out.
On the topic of e3, I really hope Nintendo get around to showing off some more of their Guitar Hero killer starring Meowth. It’s become like the next Duke Nukem.
