Death rides one more time in the upcoming Darksiders 2 Deathinative Edition for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Let’s see the difference a rewritten renderer and enhanced lighting can make.
Gunfire Games is handling the move to new-gen, and it’s a much more involved process than simply upping the resolution. Design director John Pearl explains.
“When we thought about what we wanted to do for the “Deathinitive” edition of Darksiders 2, obviously we wanted to run in native 1080p and increase the resolution of the textures. Additionally, we decided to rewrite the renderer to be physically based like a lot of other current generation game engines. What this means visually is metal, leather, stone and skin look and respond to light as you would expect them to in the real world. This new rendering method meant we revisited every texture and surface in the game, reworking and re-authoring them for the new renderer. To take full advantage of these texture changes, we’ve also gone back and relit the entire game.”
Check out the slider images below. Before images are on the left, after on the right. In some places the new visuals are subtle — the characters don’t look drastically different, but the environments really pop.
The Darksiders 2 Deathinitive Edition features the full original game and all downloadable content, relit and reworked for new gen systems. It should arrive on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 before the end of the year

Deathinitive, wow. That pun is deep in dad joke territory.
The after images are sharper, but I hope they’ve deliberately turned up the contrast to show that because I think they’re a bit too bright. The darkness of the before images suits the game better, I think.
I’m just going out on a limb here, this isn’t me being all PCMR… but that looks seriously no different to the PC version to me?
My eyes aren’t what they were but I’m struggling to see much of a difference. Has it been confirmed it will run at 60FPS?
I think the most obvious difference is in the second picture. The Crowfather’s wristband thingies are noticeably more detailed.
Death’s skin also looks a little bit less shiny.
how about a complete edition where both ds1 and 2 come to next gen console? 😀 kta
Pile of shame in steam list…. Number 1 as well…
Damnit, just give me Darksiders 3 already!
Will buy. Despite picking up in steam – I’d much prefer to play it on my 65″ tv.
plug your pc into your tv?
Connect your PC to your TV…?
It looks nice, but not $89 nice. If they included a revamped #1 into the bundle like they did with the Handsome Jack collection, I’d probably bite the bullet.
I’m not sure why I care but I bought this title on 360 and pc. It’s worth a play through, however, this particular ‘definitive edition’ seems pretty pathetic. If you haven’t played it great, but it should come with the original as well IMHO of that’s all they are doing.
omg i was disappointed with the grafix of the ps3 version but ive played the ps4 version all lastnight and was blown away with how crispy it was.even the cutscenes looked and sounded amazing….best redefined game to date!
