For the first time in thirty years, there’s a new Lupin the Third animated television series. So far, the show certainly seems promising.
A few years back, we got a Lupin the Third spin-off anime which centered on Fujiko. But this latest one, which debuts this October in Japan, is classic Lupin the Third. It’s even got the theme song — and a bunch of Fiats and Alfa Romeos.
Animator Kazuhide Tomonaga, who did key animation on The Castle of Cagliostro and worked on the original TV series, is overseeing the project, while Kanichi Kurita will be voicing Lupin, Kiyoshi Kobayashi is Daisuke Jigen, Daisuke Namikawa is Goemon, Miyuki Sawashiro is Fujiko, and Koichi Yamadera is Zenigata.
Cinema Today reports that the first of 24 weekly episodes airs starting October 1 in Japan.

The series from a few years ago wasn’t a spinoff, it was just a prequel. It was very much a Lupin series, though it’s a bit darker and closer to the original material than the more slapstick stuff from the late 70s. And it was brilliant. Great introduction to the franchise IMO, though Cagliostro does that well too.
This new one is supposedly trying to sit in the middle ground between the earlier more edgy stuff and the later more comedic works which seems interesting. Looks reasonably good.
Yeah, I was going to say the same thing. A Woman Called Fujiko Mine was about how they all got to know each other before the existing series. Saying it’s a spin off is like saying Red Jacket Lupin is a spin off of Green Jacket Lupin.
I’m so glad they’ve stuck to the traditional art style – it looks so classy and time-appropriate, and suits Lupin’s slap-sticky antics.
Yep, hits all the right notes for me. Love that art and animation style! Time to re-watch Castle of Cagliostro 🙂
