A Beautifully Drawn Game About A Dying Man

A Beautifully Drawn Game About A Dying Man

The main character of In Between isn’t going to live much longer. The only thing left is to make sense of it all.

Just as in life, nothing is straightforward in In Between. The hand-painted indie game by dev studio Gentlymad is a platformer but it’s one where you can’t jump. Instead, players have directional control of gravity and can use that ability to control where the nameless protagonist falls. Controlled falls are a good if heavy-handed metaphor for approaching the end of life but getting around In Between‘s convoluted levels isn’t the only challenge players will face. You’ll also need to manoeuvre around spiked hazards that move when you do and an encroaching darkness that sweeps across the screen when you’re not looking at it.

The video above shows the start of the game and then moves ahead to There’s an odd rhythm to controlling the falling and momentum that makes In Between feel really unique. But that particular reflex is tough to master and I was screaming at my screen for a good chunk of my time with the game. Nevertheless, from what I’ve played, it’s an intriguing, carefully built character study of a man at the end of his life, looking back with believable sorrow and regret.
