In Dragon Ball Super, there is a Saiyan form called Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan or SSGSS. It’s a mouthful! Surely, there has to be an easier way to say this. Now, there is.
A Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan is when a Saiyan gets the power of a Super Saiyan God and then becomes a Super Saiyan. The result is Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan (スーパー サイヤ人 ゴッド スーパー サイヤ人).
In Japanese, the form with its blue hair was revealed in the movie Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F and caused quite a stir at the time.
But the name Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan is just goofy. Thankfully, in the most recent Dragon Ball Super manga, the form gets a new name that’s much easier to say: Super Saiyan Blue.

Via Saiyan Island, here’s the manga transcript:
Vegeta: “Hahaha! That’s just what I was hoping for! Obviously if we’re both Super Saiyan God Super Saiyans, then as an elite I’ll definitely be superior!!”
Goku: “No way, my Super Saiyan God Super…Ow!!! I bit my tongue!!!”
Vegeta: “…”
Goku: “Hey Vegeta, can’t we do something about that long name?”
Whis drops down
Whis: “How about…Super Saiyan Blue?”
Vegeta: “…”
Goku: “Blue…”
The manga’s narration also refers to the form as Super Saiyan Blue. Again, via Saiyan Island:
Narration: “In fact, a little while before this, the terrible emperor Freeza who had previously terrorised the universe came back to life and attacked Earth. However, after meeting Beerus and Whis, Goku and Vegeta received training from Whis, managing to evolve into Super Saiyan Blue, a form surpassing Super Saiyan God. And so they even managed to defeat the revived Freeza!”
Goodbye Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan, hello Super Saiyan Blue!

I guess this is something, but to me it’d make a lot more sense to rename the Super Saiyan God (red hair) form to just Saiyan God (and a lot more accurate; SSG technically isn’t a Super Saiyan form, just a form where the user is imbued with god ki), and have the Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan (blue hair) form be called Super Saiyan God.
Also, I am a huge nerd apparently.
It was a fairly long winded and pretentious name. But with the name blue I imagine a red headed Goku with freckles who burns when he uses solar flare.
Coincidentally I just finished watching this. Really enjoyed it too, right up until the end where
Vegeta was finally given his moment and it was taken away for contrived bullshit and once again it was up to GokuDamn that soured this movie for me…..Also that most of it was
Frieza just getting beaten up for most of the movie, with no real threat.Damn me and my inability to not click spoiler tags… :/
Frieza being a threat at all was a bit silly, particularly since
Battle of Gods spent half the movie stating that only people with god ki could even damage other people with god ki, but Frieza was able to put hurt on a god ki powered Goku by training for a few months.I think at this point it doesn’t really matter. No matter what they say the only rule is that Goku has infinity power and each new threat has infinity plus one. At the next fight the hair colour and title stays the same but it’s always reset back to the end of the Freiza Saga. It’s best to just enjoy the fights for what they are and not get hung up on it.Personally I think the idea of Frieza not being a threat is the truly ridiculous part. I mean the guy was so far beyond any other life form in the galaxy that his most powerful henchmen couldn’t even scratch his weakest form. You can plot it out and the power levels all makes sense with the transformations and power ups, but I like to think Perfect Cell and Buu weren’t that much stronger than Frieza. Cell just had more control and intelligence, and Buu had special abilities.
So in terms of power levels in the anime there’s…
Saiyan, Great Ape, Golden Great Ape, Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan 2, Super Saiyan 3, Legendary Super Saiyan 3, Super Saiyan 4, Super Saiyan God, Saiyan Beyond God and Super Saiyan Blue.
Can you see the consequences associated with upping the stakes every series?
Except Golden Great Ape, Legendary Super Saiyan 3, Super Saiyan 4 & Saiyan Beyond God don’t actually exist. GT has been disowned by Toriyama for decades now and is considered by him and a lot of the fan base as non canon.
Plus I have no idea where you get Legendary Super Saiyan 3 & Saiyan Beyond God from
I’ve never heard of “Beyond God” as a form, but I believe there was a card based DB arcade game in japan recently that feature Broly as a Legendary Super Sayain 3.
Mind you, Broly only appears in games and non cannon movies, so his status as an in continuity character is debatable (I still like Broly myself though)
“GT has been disowned by Toriyama for decades now”
wish we had that crying/laughing emoji.
Saiyan Beyond God is from Resurrection F, and is basically like a new base form where the user has previously transformed into a Super Saiyan God and reverted back to their base form while managing to maintain its power. It’s essentially a form where the user kept their power boost from Super Saiyan God, making the SSG form useless.
Legendary Super Saiyan 3, on the other hand, is a form that Broly received in some of the games, and is a purely non-canon form.
Why do I have a sinking feeling we will soon see Super Saiyan Blue 2, Super Saiyan Blue 3, Super Saiyan Blue 4, etc…
Comes 10 years in the future, who knows, we might be able to see a Super Saiyan Rainbow!!!
