You had a good run, PlayStation 3, but the writing was on the wall when the PS4 came out. You’ve been superseded, demoted, set aside. Retired. And now your papers have been signed by Sony itself. Well, in New Zealand anyway, but I’m sure Australia — and the rest of the world — will follow.
A few sites, including Videogamer and ThoseGamers, caught wind of news that the PS3 wasn’t long for NZ and after politely tapping Sony Computer Entertainment NZ on the shoulder, the latter received the following confirmation:
“SCENZ will not be shipping anymore PlayStation 3 consoles to its retailers however the platform is still available in retail outlets throughout NZ and being supported with peripherals, great new releases and back catalogue software.”
It’s hardly a ground-breaking revelation, but it does mark the start of the aging console’s retreat from retailer shelves and eventually, consumer lounge rooms. Not that the PS3 is by any means dead… as long as they keep making replacement lasers for the Blu-Ray drive (I had to have mine replaced, twice).

Great new Releases? Has anything good been released on the PS3 or X360 lately? I mean Destiny 2 came out, and they got the Skylanders/Infinity/Lego gotta buy em all games. But has there seriously been any great new releases for either of these machines?
Yeah, I think at least on the 360, the new Tomb Raider will be the “final” game to be released on it. I was hoping for BlOps3 as well, but since it’s only half a game on the 360/PS3, I’m not counting that as a game.
The new Guitar Hero is coming out on the 360/PS3 as well (I think).
You know they just say that, right? Why would they say they don’t have great releases?
Geez, that’s happening much faster than usual for a previous gen console to disappear from the shelves, isn’t it?
Pity… there are so many great games for it, and if somebody wasn’t too concerned about having the latest or greatest then a cheap PS3 + a whole heap of cheap games could be a really good option. But I guess the reason they’re stopping it is probably because it’s not selling well anymore, so there probably aren’t many people taking up that option.
Brand new PS3’s were hardly worth it at this point anyway. You could get a preowned one hell cheap and 8 year (ish) since launch I’m not surprised Sony no-longer wants to support the old stuff.
You know what’s bad – they never got down to $99 – want a new PS3 today – it’s still gonna set you back almost $300! The fact that these 7th Gen consoles (Wii aside) never got to the $100 mark is a pretty major failure in light of previous generations
that’s what i was waiting for. i’ve already got 4 ps3’s, but i really wanted a brand new one sitting in it’s box, so that when the inevitable happens, i’ve got something brand new to pull out and continue enjoying.
They were $150 the other day
Well i’m glad i bought a 250gb PS3 in good condition of Ebay, though it was $150-200 and previously another buyer left me high and dry purchasing his ps3, the scoundrel!
There are so many legitimately good games on PS3 (By the way i own a 360 as well), i mainly use it for JRPG’s and some of the exclusives =)
Probably a good thing, since they break allot. LOL
