Nintendo’s sending a big new patch down Mario Maker alley next week, adding checkpoints and more complicated power-ups among other features.
On November 4, when the patch goes live for Nintendo’s wonderful new level creator, you’ll be able to add checkpoint flags to your level (by shaking the arrow sign in the editor). You’ll also be able to “attach” power-ups to make them contingent upon Mario’s current state — so if you smack a mushroom on a fire flower and put them together in a box, Mario will get the mushroom if he’s small and the fire flower if he’s big.
Mario Maker’s also going to start getting special courses thanks to a new “Event Courses” hub. Says Nintendo:
The software update also introduces Event Courses in the game’s Course World online hub. Event Courses will feature levels from partner creators outside Nintendo. One of the first Event Courses will be “Ship Love,” the winning level from the “hackathon” event that was held at Facebook’s headquarters in Menlo Park earlier this year. Facebook is the first outside partner in the United States to design a level for Super Mario Maker; employees had the opportunity to design and present their creations to a panel of judges before the winning level was selected.
They will also be adding a section called “Official Makers” that will allow them to send out levels made by Nintendo designers among other VIPs.
Here’s a video walkthrough of all the new features:

Woohoo!
HOOOOOOLY SHIT!
Though at the same time I hate that this is something that had to be patched in. I miss having a safehaven from current gaming trends in Nintendo. At least we’re not at the point of 9GB day one patches yet…
Finalllllyyyyyyyyyyy.
I never thought they woud do this.
I still want the ability to add 45 degree surfaces through. Slides would be awesome to play with.
I would love if they implemented a way to edit / layout a world map, so you could create an entire game worth of levels that properly flow into each other. That is very unlikely to happen.
And while I’m dreaming, they should go full Mario Paint and include a sprite and music editor in there so you could make your own graphics and tunes. That will never happen.
