For me, going into an RPG like Fallout always means spending hours agonizing over every single stat. Thanks to the wonders of the internet, however, I can now start that meticulous process before the game is actually in my hands.
Introducing RPG Gaming’s Fallout 4 Build Planner. It’s a fan website that lets you allocate SPECIAL + assign perks based on your build, thus allowing you to formulate a Fallout 4 character, at least on paper. Just be warned — the tool is partially based on the recent Fallout 4 leak, meaning that using it means reading some minor gameplay-related Fallout 4 spoilers.
Starting out, you can name your character and put points into your Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Agility, and Luck. Here’s what I quickly whipped up:
After you sort that out, click ‘Next.’ You should land on this screen:
Here, you can ‘level up’ your character, which then lets you pick out Perks derived from your SPECIAL stats. That screen should look like this:
Any Vault Boys in grey stand for Perks that are available to you. You can hover over these Perks, and the app will give you a description:
The Vault Boys that are blacked out, however, aren’t available to you — unless of course you go back and tweak your stats! Otherwise, you can still hover over those Vault Boys to learn about what they stand for, even if you can’t select them in that moment.
In any case, I leveled up my character five times and went with these Perks:
ARMORER: Building armour always seems like a good idea.
HACKER: I want to hack into computers!
LOCKSMITH: No locks will stand in my way.
ANIMAL FRIEND: My guess is that this Perk is proooobably useless, but I’m really curious about it, too.
The overall result is this:
My actual character will likely end up with a different build, as I peruse all my options and deliberate over all the possibilities, but for now, this is a start! Usually, I like to play as smart, suave characters who know how to handle a gun — so that’s what I’ll try to fineagle in the coming days.

Are the perks accurate to the release state?
I believe the perks are accurate as of the leaks that have come out from broken street dates over the last week… So currently? Yes.
That looks…daunting.
Can you pick a pre-built, rasonably well balanced character and just start playing?
This would be a good feature, i hope it is in there. Otherwise i will just do a quick google for people uploading their build stats and use that.
That used to be a thing in the old Fallouts hasn’t been in the more recent ones. If you’re looking for a good character creation guide Many A True Nerd has a pretty guide out.
Thanks. I love playing big games like this, but I hate, hate, hate character management.
I wish there was an option that your character just acquired those traits by what they do in the game, rather than managing them all manually.
I remember having a mod for fallout new vegas which made it so you got relevant perks based off your skill levels ie if you levelled up your gun skill you got some relevant perks at certain levels ie every 10 levels.
Fallout has always been big on character creation, this system is a heavily streamlined version of the previous ones. I’m hoping it won’t turn out to be too simple.
theres no level cap and you put points into specials at level up instead of taking a perk if you want. best to just go with 4 in each special then you get an extra special from finding the related bobbleheads
Yes. 10 in Perception. Thanks.
Probably not. Here’s your hunting rifle, Welcome to Fallout
lol pretty much
Damd. I was hoping this would be like the Saints Row character generator that released before number 4. You could sculpt your character and then import it once you picked up the full game… I would love to be able to make my character ahead of time and then just get into the game as soon as it is loaded (and probably downloaded the patch…)
Yeah. If it’s not an official pre-release tool where I can import my character, then I’ll pass.
yeah this is bascially a level up planner
Just curious, who here is picking this up Day 1?
I’m on the fence on whether to grab it, or wait for reviews.
My wife and I each have our own copies preordered so we don’t have to share. We go balls deep in my house.
Exactly the same situation here. Side by side desktops with pre-ordered copies.
Though she is saying she’s not going to play until some serious patching happens.
Early leaks have indicated broken/glitchy AI and quest chains but I’ll wait and see. There’ll probably be a day 1 patch and I’m not convinced those leaks aren’t coming from old builds anyway, the way some of the lack of polish has been described.
I have next week off work so ain’t nothing stopping me except the occasional need to eat.
It went gold on the 27th so that gives them 14 days of polishing which gives me some hope with a zero day patch. Better than going gold a couple days before release at least.
i cant take early leaks of gameplay seriously, i feel a good way of getting back at people who leak early is have a day one patch with the game prior to the patch being buggy and crap, so when people playing day one have a flawless experience and puts a dent in the credibility of those who broke street date and reported on it. to be on topic though im picking mine up midnight.
Reviews will be out for Day 1 so yes, if they are positive I’ll be picking it up on my lunch break!
My girlfriend is working the midnight launch and I’ll be picking her, and my copy, up at 1 am 🙂
Iwas going to wait but then I saw the JB pre-order. $59 on any platform. I’m a PC player so that will save me a bit of downloading and there was no way I wouldn’t eventually get the game anyway.
Yeah, I saw that pre-order deal. Plus i got a voucher for jb for $50 so… kind of a given I’m actually going to get this lol.
The JB pre order price tipped me over. I am still sort of on the fence about whether it will be good though. But for the price, and the fact I dont really have anything I’m playing; figured why not…
Now that there is no level cap meaning you can level every stat up to 10 and be a wasteland god, it doesnt really matter what stats you start with.
Personally I’m just gonna dump all my points into Luck and then be even in every other stat. May even try a 1 in everything build at some point. The new “hardcore”…
Charisma & Intelligence = 1 Builds are hilarious.
I’ve been hearing that the game will actually cater to low INT runs better than 3/NV did, more along the lines of the classic games, rather than just locking you out of certain options. Whether that is true remains to be seen.
5 days!
Whoa whoa whoa – where’s my Black Widow perk?? The Lady Killer one is there; I really, really hope Black Widow is there too. I love that perk – there’s alllllways way more dudes in the game than women. Unless…
No wait, never mind – it’s in game as ‘Man Hunter’, but this creator just doesn’t show it. PHEW.
I’ve never used a Black Widow Perk as a Male Character, I should really try a playthrough like that lol.
It was so, so good in 3 and New Vegas, simply because so many NPCs and Quest-Givers were dudes. I was lethal 😀
You mean Confirmed Bachelor.
I’ll keep an open mind until I try it, but boy am I unsure about not having the old skill system…
Probably a good idea for me to have a look at this. I usually end up spending hours on character creation picking the right stats and perks! Thankfully made a bit easier knowing I’ll be able to max out my stats anyways 🙂
