Black Ops 3 won’t have a campaign mode on Xbox 360 and PS3, and the game’s frame rate will fluctuate between 30 and 60 frames-per-second. But here’s why they’re making a version for ageing hardware: Activision’s revealed there are still 12 million monthly active users for the three-year-old Black Ops II. Damn.
Call of Duty fan site Charlie Intel noticed this incredible statistic buried in Activision’s latest financial report, overshadowed by the King acquisition:
On November 6, 2015, Activision Publishing expects to release the highly anticipated Call of Duty: Black Ops III from its award-winning studio, Treyarch. Momentum ahead of launch has been strong and engagement for Call of Duty: Black Ops II grew quarter-over-quarter again to nearly 12 million MAUsB, an unprecedented level for a game that is three years old and only available on old-generation consoles.
That number was 11 million in August, meaning the player base has grown, likely driven by people getting ready for the release of Black Ops 3 in a few days.
Activision doesn’t break down players by platform, however, so it’s worth noting that we can’t specifically say how this splits between 360, PS3, and PC.
Black Ops 3 might not be the optimal experience on Microsoft and Sony’s old machines, but players are sticking with their old consoles, so Activision is, too.

I thought Black Ops 2 was regarded a better multiplayer experience than Ghosts and AW. Could that be the reason why there is still a large fan base playing it? Similar reason CoD 4 still has an active community.
There was a promo that went out recently that said if you got to certain milestones (I think it was level 10, level 25, and prestige at least once) in Black Ops 2, Ghosts, or Advanced Warfare, you get in game bonuses (player card, reticles, weapon camo respectively) in Black Ops 3. Black Ops 2 being the most popular in the series, I gather this increase is mostly all the COD fans going back to BlOps2 to get those bonuses.
I haven’t played multiplayer since MW2, I don’t like hearing what my mum did the night before.
I’ve played MW and MW2…
…but never multiplayer *runs away*
Haha and who she did things with the night before!
The new consoles are almost 2 years old and games for the old generation are still being pumped out. Mind you, the last PS2 game was released about the same time that the PS4 & Xbone were released so there’ll probably be a lot more PS3 & 360 games/versions still to come
Wasn’t the last PS2 game PES in like 2014?
They’re all probably playing Zombies in preparation for the new one.
Anyone know if achievements on Xbox 360 would carry across to Xbox One?
Xbox One will only be provided for Xmas, but my son will probably feel seriously left out while waiting until then just to play Black Ops 3.
They don’t carry across, I leaned this with PvZ Garden Warfare a game we unlocked so much on on the 360 only to go back to square one on X1
People are still paying the old call of duty’s because each game gets progressively worse than the last one. mw1 is still better than and of the new ones to play.
How about, instead of releasing a crappy neutered port for aging hardware, build some cool DLC for the PS3 version. I’d have thought this would be cheaper for them and just as profitable.
