Payday 2 And Goat Simulator Is Like Celebrities Getting Hitched For Attention

Payday 2 and Goat Simulator have updates going live about now-ish that introduce content from each others’ games. In true Goat Simulator fashion, it’s very silly, and will somehow keep both games relevant for probably longer than they should be.

The machine churning out Goat Simulator is a master of media attention. It’s better at media publishing than it is at game creation. I’ve actually included Goat Simulator in a talk about how to increase posts about your game before. Gamasutra has also done an interesting post about it. Just look at those media spikes. The regular material coming out of the Goat Simulator camp not only keeps it relevant in this here 24-hour news cycle, but they regularly generate “wtf” content that makes you think “Huh? That’s crazy, I have to check it out.”

Goat Simulator in itself is “wtf?” Take its original launch trailer, a spoof of another trailer getting lots of attention at the time. Then it’s “wtf, they made an MMO?” Or “wtf, a parkour update?” It doesn’t matter whether it’s good or not, it’s shareable, and makes writers and Youtubers check it out. Look, I’m doing it right now! The Payday 2 cross-promotion is the latest iteration of that.

So what do you get with the update? I’m relying on the Steam page, which is significantly less broken than the official page.

  • A new shotgun
  • Two new songs
  • Four new goat-themed masks
  • Four new melee weapons
  • A new two-day mission

The missions is described below:

Day 1 – This Was Not the Deal – When the PAYDAY gang were ordered by Vlad to intercept a truck carrying cocaine, they expected to act as clean-up and collect the goods. Easy peasy. Or at leas that’s what they thought. But as they arrive on the scene and see the crashed truck, there is no cocaine packages in sight… only goats… and chaos…

Day 2 – Dirty Work – Vlad’s driver, Boris has drawn the lucky assignment of being “goat extractor”. Get him the animals and he’ll take care of the messy part – or at least that’s what we’re being told.

So basically, another mission for $10. There will be lots of goats everywhere, and based on the description and below video, I’m guessing you have to wrangle them into the truck.

Then there’s the Payday 2 additions to Goat Simulator, which you can see below:

Except there’s nothing to actually see there, because like all the trailers, there’s no actual information. It’s just “Hey we did a thing!” More noise to keep Goat Simulator in your consciousness, just like every damn Kim Kardashian and Kanye headline. If you have fun with Goat Simulator, more power to you. I don’t begrudge that at all. In fact, I just have to give it credit — in terms of playing the media metagame, it’s the MVP, and Payday 2 needed some of that love.
