It’s not too often that the digital sales on consoles match up to those available through Steam, the Humble Bundle, Good Old Games, or many of the other PC-specific distribution platforms. But the January sale available for locals through the PSN store right now has some surprisingly good value, if you’ve got some leftover cash from the holidays.
All the prices below are in Australian dollars as of this morning, and I’ll order the list from cheapest to most expensive to make everyone’s lives easier. Everything quoted will remain on sale until January 22 unless otherwise stated, and each of the games will go through to the Aussie PSN webpage if you want more details from a web browser.
Another note worth pointing out: Sony have continued to add games over the course of the sale, so by the time we hit January 22 there may be other games discounted or available that weren’t previously. As always, check before you buy.
Hotline Miami (PS3, PS4, PS Vita): $4.55
Switch Galaxy Ultra (PS4, PS Vita): $5.95
Hatoful Boyfriend (PS4, PS Vita): $7.55
Metal Gear Solid 5 Ground Zeroes (PS4): $7.55
Worth noting that it’s $5.95 if you want to play MGS5 Ground Zeroes on PS3. Hatoful Boyfriend’s at a Steam-esque price for something off-beat, and Hotline Miami should be in everyone’s library. The original’s still the best, too.
Valiant Hearts The Great War (PS3, PS4): $7.55
Worms Battlegrounds (PS4): $7.55
Goat Simulator (PS3, PS4): $8.25
Hand of Fate (PS4): $8.95
Titan Souls (PS4, PS Vita): $8.95
TRIVIAL PURSUIT LIVE! (PS4): $8.95
Beyond Eyes (PS4): $9.55
Tembo The Badass Elephant (PS4): $8.60 with PS+ discount, $9.55 without
Trivial Pursuit — which quite a lot of people enjoy, before you get snarky — is a fraction cheaper if you’re buying on PS3. Goat Simulator and Valiant Hearts are the same price regardless of platform, however.
Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris (PS4): $10.45, $14.95 for season pass bundle
Terraria (PS4): $9.95
Velocity 2X (PS4, PS Vita): $10.45
Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty (PS3, PS4): $11.25
Tales from the Borderlands Season Pass (PS3, PS4): $11.95
The Walking Dead: The Complete First Season (PS4): $11.95
The first Tales of the Borderlands episode is free to download, so this season pass is effectively the entire season. The Walking Dead season 1 is a fraction cheaper on PS3 and PS Vita ($8.95), while Terraria on PS3 isn’t discounted at all.
Some of these games you probably already own if you’ve had an active PS+ account across 2015: Temple of Osiris and Oddworld were both available at various points. If you didn’t grab them then, however, the asking price now isn’t much.
Murdered: Soul Suspect (PS4): $13.46 with PS+, $14.95 without
Shovel Knight (PS3, PS4, PS Vita): $14.95
The Wolf Among Us (PS4): $14.95
Wolfenstein: The Old Blood (PS4): $14.95
Axiom Verge (PS4): $16.95
Chivalry Medieval Warfare (PS4): $16.95
Armello (PS4): $17.95
Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments (PS3, PS4): $17.95
Rayman Legends (PS4): $17.95
DmC Devil May Cry: Definitive Edition (PS4): $19.96 with PS+ discount, $24.95 without
Few things here. All the Telltale games are slightly cheaper on PS3 or Vita if they’re available. Rayman Legends is $14.95 for PS3 players as well, although I can’t imagine that would be a deal-breaker for too many people considering the cutesy platformer.
Lot of value though, and it’s nice to see Armello at a pretty tempting price. It’s definitely worth a pickup if you haven’t played it (and is likely to have a larger player base than the few hundred that play on PC every month). I’m a big fan of the DmC reboot as well, although I had the advantage of being new to the franchise when I played the reboot.
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter (PS4): $17.95
Wolfenstein The New Order (PS4): $17.95
The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 (PS4): $19.45
The Jackbox Party Pack (PS4): $20.95
Bound by Flame (PS4): $22.95
The Jackbox Party Pack 2 (PS4): $22.95
The Evil Within (PS4): $22.95
A lot of these games are noticeably cheaper on PS3, although Bound by Flame is a couple of dollars more cheaper on the newer console. There’s a Jackbox bundle with both packs, but it’s not included as part of the sale so you’re better off buying the packs individually now (you’ll save over $20). Interestingly, the PS3 versions of the Jackbox games aren’t discounted either.
The Evil Within should run pretty nicely these days post-patches, if you’re looking for some more horror post-Christmas, and The New Order is a superb shooter than should be played by all fans of the genre. Vanishing of Ethan Carter is a personal favourite of mine too: I think it pulled off the trick that Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture did more successfully, and there’s fewer frustrations (bar that bloody maze puzzle).
Assassin’s Creed Unity (PS4): $24.95
Far Cry 4 (PS4): $22.46 with PS+, $24.95 without
Middle-earth Shadow of Mordor Legion Edition (PS4): $22.46 with PS+, $24.95 without
The Talos Principle Deluxe Edition (PS4): $24.95
Tropico 5 (PS4): $24.95
Alien Isolation (PS4): $24.26 with PS+, $26.95 without
SOMA (PS4): $28.95
F1 2015 (PS4): $27.86 with PS+, $30.95 without
J-Stars Victory VS+ Digital Edition (PS4): $39.95
A lot of these are way cheaper on PS3 — Alien Isolation is just under $13, and there are plenty of smaller discounts too. Lot of good older games, but if you haven’t given it a look please consider The Talos Principle. It’s a truly excellent puzzler, really.
That’s the pick of what’s currently available as of today. More could change over the coming days, but if you can’t find something to play on your PS3, PS4 or PS Vita in that lot then … well, come to think of it, there’s not much in the way of simulations or space sims there.
But there are plenty of games regardless. And you can find other titles on the PSN store or by browsing through your console directly. What caught your eye, and what games have you been holding out on?

Lol, I got Omega Quintet for PS4 on sale. It’s sooooo stupid and terrible. I love it…
Got a few too many of these i paid full price for!
Still – good timing for payday 😉
Can anyone recommend Jackbox Party? Been looking at that for a while – reminded me a lot of “You dont know Jack” from the 90s! Im guessing its the same crew that did it
Also thinking of the Talos Principle – completely missed that game!
Yes, Jackbox Party Packs are fantastic. Pick the first one up and you’ll love it.
Thanks mate – get the misses into it tomorrow night i think
She likes to try and be smarter than me and in this one i feel she just might be lololol
Talos Principle and Mordor interest me. If I didn’t already have like 5 games I haven’t started I’d probably pull the trigger on those.
Also if you haven’t played the Wolfenstein’s, those prices are real good, especially for the New Order.
Mordor was very good but by the end you are too powerful and every mission is a bit of a chore as there is little to no challenge. Was also super disappointed with the ending as I believe everyone else was.
Another minor gripe I had was that some of the cooler abilities you don’t get until super late in the game when realistically you don’t have chance to make the most of them.
Heaps fun for the most part though – and definitely worth $20 or whatever it is.
Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments (PS3, PS4): $17.95
Definite buy.
Might pick up Wolfenstein (both games) after trading in my physical copy a while ago. Also AC Unity as it’s at a price where I don’t mind a few bugs now. Really keen on Ethan Carter now though (thanks @alexwalker). One that slipped under my radar. Good job it’s payday today…
I think I’ve used the PS sale more than the steam sale this year.
Ha, agreed. I picked up quite a few things from the PS January and Xbox Countdown sales. Steam sales weren’t all that appealing this year.
Mind you, I don’t have 200 unplayed games sitting in my console backlogs either.
Not yet, anyway.
Sleeping Dogs Definitive Edition is under $20 on PS4. Good value that one is.
The PS Vita also has a bunch of stuff on sale that is different to the other listings. Stuff like Trigger Happy Havoc for example.
Loved these sales.
$22 for Dishonoured definitive edition.
Tempted to repurchase Hardline in that sale.
Also….would love to know when Rebel Galaxy is coming to AU PSN store.
It’s worth noting the GOTY Editon of SoM is only 5 bucks more than the Legion Edition.
Also worth noting that SoM has some of the most underwhelming additional content seen in any GOTY edition I’ve seen.
The base game is more than enough for most people. I reckon the GOTY edition is only worth it for Tolkien nuts.
Lord of the Hunt was kind of eh, but the Bright Lord was pretty good.
Download sizes are such a pain in the ass this gen.
Just on your space sim/exploration comment – it’s not there yet, but Rebel Galaxy is out on PS4 in the US and is coming “very soon” to the EU / Aussie shops. It probably won’t be on much of a sale, but it’s cheap anyway, so you might want to check that out when it drops if you haven’t already on PC Alex 😉
