The next Star Wars movie in the new trilogy has been pushed back a bit: Episode VIII will hit theatres on 15 December 2017, several months later than its initially scheduled winter 2017 release date.
Per StarWars.com, the Rian Johnson-helmed sequel to last December’s The Force Awakens will be in theatres almost two years to the day after its predecessor.
Today, Disney and Lucasfilm announced that Star Wars: Episode VIII, originally scheduled for release in summer 2017, will now debut on December 15, 2017.

Written and directed by Rian Johnson, Star Wars: Episode VIII is currently in preproduction and will begin principal photography in London next month. Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman will produce and J.J. Abrams, Jason McGatlin, and Tom Karnowski will executive produce. Stay tuned for exciting updates in the coming weeks.
Kind of a bummer? Hopefully it means the movie will be better for it.

Noooooooooooo (I’m actually fine with this, makes for an even better movie)oooooooooooooooooooo!!!
OMG they r the same, silly!
American summer is our winter…
He knows.
Whooooosh….
It’s almost certain the only reason it’s delayed is because Force Awakens has made so much money they want to gun the same release window. It’ll be the same movie, films are finished months in advance of release remember, they’re not like video games.
For awhile now, commercial interests have been committing crimes against humanity and progress. This has to be one of the worst cases.
Considering Rogue One was supposed to be coming out Decemebr this year, this isn’t a surprising move. I expect we’ll see a similar schedule with the last of the trilogy too.
Rogue one still is. Theyre just claiming december essentially as a starwars month
Just re-read my comment and yeah, sounds like I was suggesting Rogue One is moving 😛
What I meant was I expect we’ll see a main movie every other year and a side one in between.
lol yep.
I also expect in a few years we’ll hear a new trilogy is in the works with 10 – 12 (not even kidding).
Then we’ll get more movies set inbetween those etc etc.
I love what Disneys done but if anyone things they’re gonna let THIS cashcow settle after 6 movies? Insanity.
I honestly thought this was already the plan, this article was a weird read for me.
Hell it was a weird reading an article about the movie being delayed to pretty much the exact date I thought it was already scheduled for.
The visual effects guys and girls just breathed a massive sigh of relief.
Yeah I have no idea how they thought they could accomplish post production on a movie like that with less than a year
slave labour.
I didn’t know there was a May release date planned so as far as I’m concerned this was the release date the whole time and Star Wars is just a Christmas thing now.
Correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t JJ Abrams basically beg Disney to change the release date for episode VII from December 2015 to May 2016 and Disney flatout refused. Interesting that they’ve wasted no time announcing a delay for episode VIII.
They looked at all the billions of dollars ep VII made in that December slot and decided it works pretty well for them.
Makes sense, but then it’s Star Wars, it’ll make buttloads of cash no matter when it’s released. My guess is because the merchandise will sell better at that time of year with everybody buying stuff for christmas presents.
Its cause we are getting a spin off starwars origin story in between each episode
Also probably something to do with Disney having their Marvel movies that tend to come out around mid-year, so want to let the air clear a bit before they release Star Wars so their movies aren’t competing with each other for attention, merchandise sales, etc
I’m actually happy about this. Something that not just movies should be doing but games too…taking that extra time to make it right. I don’t care if I have to wait five years for the new Star Wars or game or whatever…in fact…don’t put release dates on things that are still in very early stages, release dates are just soooo much pressure…and people make mistakes under pressure.
I, for one, accept Poe Dameron’s apology.
Well this is news to me that it was even coming out BEFORE December 2017. I was under the impression that Episode VIII was going to continue the tradition of saga films releasing near Christmas. Seems it will be now. 😛
A movie I thought of as 18 months away is now 2 years away. Doesn’t seem that big of a deal, it’s not like I had my tickets and was expecting to see it next month when it got pushed back.
I’d rather wait a few years for a good sequel than have them turn out something not up to par.
I was under the impression it was always supposed to be every 2 years with a filler movie in between. Ep VII, Rouge One, Ep VIII, Han Solo Movie, Ep IX
It’s not like they were ever going to release Rogue One and Ep VIII in the same month.
I’m afraid “sorry” doesn’t cut it with this, Poe. //Slightly obscure reference.
