For the past month or so, cosplayers have been uploading photos to Twitter, asking illustrators to turn their photos into 2D illustrations.
Previously, Kotaku published a series of photos that were turned into illustrations. The key difference here is, as mentioned above, cosplayers have been requesting these drawings, using the Twitter hashtag #絵師さんにイラスト化してほしい画像をレイヤーが垂れ流す (loosely translated, that’s “Images put out by cosplayers who want artists to illustrate them”).
These are not exact reproductions of the photos and are not intended to be, but rather, illustrative interpretations of the cosplay, which are interpretations of the original characters. That makes for a fascinating dynamic, I think.

Some pretty good ones there. Some bad ones too but whatever
General instruction from all cosplayers:
“make my eyes huge like I’ve just popped a pill!”
“Big eyes” are usually mentioned when talking about anime, but these drawings help to illustrate something a much bigger but somehow subtler exaggeration: head size. If you pay attention, you’ll notice how the drawing version either kept the head size of the original picture, making the body comparatively much smaller (and, needs be said, slimmer) or kept more or less the original body size, making the head much, much bigger.
Imagine if our eyes were actually that big and our noses small also…
Like this thing?

I don’t think I get this. It looks like the original characters being cosplayed are just being drawn in the pose of the cosplayer rather than someone drawing the cosplayer themselves… Was there even a point to the cosplay? Couldn’t you just say “Draw the character doing this.”?
Yeah, there’s something really weird about animated characters being cosplayed by real people and then drawn into animated characters again.
Hahah, yeah, that seemed a little strange to me, too… but it looks good, so there’s that.
I think the real purpose might be that this way, rather than cosplayers comparing their cosplay to an existing image that’s very difficult to replicate, you can instead much more easily draw the characters in the pose/situation that the cosplayer creates.
Makes for excellent comparison shots that might not otherwise be possible.
I watch so many anime series but i actually don’t know who any of them are cosplaying from maybe besides 2…
