The recent financial success of The Witness goes to show that people are happy to simply wander around game worlds. Sure there are puzzles to solve, but you’re mostly free to just exist. An indie title by the name Eastshade looks like it’s taking the same tack, except you get to take paintings of the scene.
Yes, “take”, as in like you would with a camera. You literally walk around, find a nice landscape, frame it up and pop — a painting materialises on the canvas in front of you.
Is that all you do? Not exactly, as the website explains:
You are a traveling painter, exploring the island of Eastshade. Capture the world on canvas using your artist’s easel. Talk to the inhabitants to learn about their lives. Make friends and help those in need. Discover mysteries and uncover secrets about the land. Surmount natural impasses to reach forgotten places. Experience how your actions impact the world around you.
I think it’s fair to say it’s not going to satisfy everyone’s palate (or should that be palette?), but if Jonathan Blow can pull it off, there’s nothing stopping these guys.
