They remained hidden but now we finally have video footage of them in action: the secret menus within Mortal Kombat 1, 2 and 3 that nobody accessed for more than two decades.
To access the test menus on an arcade cabinet, here is the order you need to enter the block codes in — and you have to alternate from player 1 to player 2 to make this happen. The numbers in brackets are the amount of times you have to hit the block key.
Mortal Kombat 1: P1 (5), P2 (10), P1 (2), P2 (1), P1 (2), P2 (3), P1 (4)
Mortal Kombat 2: P1 (5), P2 (10), P1 (2), P2 (8), P1 (2)
Mortal Kombat 3/Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3: P1 (5), P2 (10), P1 (3), P2 (1), P1 (2), P2 (2), P1 (3), P2 (4)
Provided you get the timing down, you’ll get access to a secret debug menu. Below you’ll see what’s available.
I like the idea of being able to switch from a fatality to Galaga in a Mortal Kombat cabinet. Also, I wish I could have a room — or the money — to have a room to store four arcade cabinets.
Probably not the first time Ed Boon has seen something like this, though.
