We already knew that Quantum Break would be hitting the Xbox One in April. But the next game from the creators of Max Payne is also coming to Windows, too. And if you pre-order the console version, you can get Quantum Break on PC for free.
Even better for console owners, Remedy Entertainment’s much-loved Alan Wake titles will be landing Microsoft’s newest game machine too, for no extra charge if you pre-order. Here are the details from Microsoft’s announcement:
Alan Wake Included with Quantum Break for Xbox One; American Nightmare Available with Pre-Order
Two of Remedy Entertainment’s most popular and critically-acclaimed classics — Alan Wake and Alan Wake’s American Nightmare — are now part of the Quantum Break experience. Every copy of Quantum Break for Xbox One will come with a full-game download for Alan Wake for Xbox 360, plus its two add-on packs, The Signal and The Writer, playable on Xbox One via Backward Compatibility. Fans who pre-order Quantum Break for Xbox One at participating retailers or through the Xbox Store will also receive a full-game download of Alan Wake’s American Nightmare for Xbox 360.
Pre-Order Quantum Break for Xbox One to Receive the Windows 10 Version at No Additional Cost
Xbox wants to empower gamers to play the games they want with the people they want on the devices they want, so Microsoft Studios and Remedy Entertainment will launch Quantum Break on Windows 10 simultaneously with the Xbox One version on April 5, 2016. Anyone who pre-orders the Xbox One digital version of Quantum Break through the Xbox Store, purchases an Xbox One digital token at participating retailers, or pre-orders an Xbox One Special Edition Quantum Break bundle, will receive the Windows 10 version of the game downloadable at the Windows Store via redemption code.*
The news of the Break/Wake XB1 bundle comes after some Wake-themed foreshadowing by Remedy creative director Sam Lake.

The existence of backwards-compatible Alan Wake games isn’t a total surprise since Alan Wake’s American Nightmare were amongst the ones that leaked out last weekend alongside Red Dead Redemption. It’s not quite the new game that Alan Wake fans have been hoping for but a great way to experience those games for those who haven’t played them.

Awesome news 🙂 I thought we’d be waiting years like we did with Alan Wake.
This is a fantastic idea. Cross-platform meaning more is always a good thing. Especially without having to re-buy something you already own on another platform.
Hell yeah, although It’s becoming increasingly difficult to justify my ownership of an Xbox One.
I think Exclusive to Console and PC is the best of both worlds, it’s still a game PS4 doesn’t have and people interested in a PC version probably would prefer it that way even if they owned the console.
I suspect MS would probably rather have kept it exclusive to XBone in the hope of driving sales of the console (assuming they see it as a potential system seller). More likely the financial reality of creating a big-budget AAA game PLUS all the live action video means they probably need the wider audience of PC in addition to XBone to help recover the production costs. They’re effectively making a AAA game PLUS a tv series – that can’t be cheap. Porting from XBone to PC wouldn’t cost much and opens up a much bigger group of potential customers.
This seems crazy – but I’ll take it!!
🙁 no pc version for physical copies? Seems like you only get it if you buy the digital copy or buying the console.
obviously so you can’t preorder a physical xbox one copy and get the pc version free, then sell the xbox one copy.
anything otherwise would be plain stupid from a business standpoint.
But you can do it if you get the Xbox One console bundle and it will come with the PC download code for free.
Now they just need to release Crackdown and Gears on PC, and I’m a happy camper!!
So what’s the point of giving out a free copy of the PC version if you buy the Xbone version? Why would you want two copies of the same game?
Just genuinely curious.
Does it have cross save? Maybe you can play on XBone at home then pick up where you left off on your laptop. Or something.
It’s not the first time this has been done – the PS3 version of Portal 2 also came with a free copy of the PC version via Steam.

So yes, it does seem like there’s cross platform saves at least…so that’s something I guess.
Just made my day 🙂 thankyou!
The last few reviews I read of this game were less than stellar. Offering everything and the kitchen sink in order to get people to pre-order is probably going to boost sales quite a bit.
* takes off tinfoil hat *
Also, PC sales were almost guaranteed to be higher due to the larger user base. Give people the opportunity to get both versions when they were going to get one anyway and they could always flog their XBox copy.
Although I do notice there’s a “*” at the bottom of the deal, and no mention what conditions that implies.
It doesn’t work like that… only the DIGITAL version on xbox gets you free pc.
You have nothing to resell
Except it looks like the offer is for digital only, making it much harder if not impossible to sell one of them.
Ah, yeah.
It does say you can get a redemption token at participating retailers. Although reading closer you have to redeem the PC version through the Windows store (I didn’t even know that still existed), so I’m assuming that’s tied to your Xbox account in some way.
I took that as meaning for the Alan Wake games, but you can preorder anywhere and get the PC version too… is a bit confusing lol
It’s right there in the text…
“Xbox wants to empower gamers to play the games they want with the people they want on the devices they want”
It’s a damn fine offer tbh, i can play my music and videos i purchase for the most part on all my devices for one price, why not games too!
It’s not really much of an incentive, but I do eventually pick up all my console games on PC where available. Usually in high discount sales. Just means I’m covered for replaying my favourite games if I offload the console/game or it dies of old age down the track.
I’ll just sit here in the corner quietly hopeful that this is the start of the triumphant return of GFWL … I must be the only PC gamer who played exclusively GFWL (where possible) for those sweet, sweet Xbox cheevos.
*Looks awkwardly at GFWL Arkham Aslyum and 360 copy*… at least this time the XBL integration is built into Windows 10 and won’t need the… less than stellar launcher!
That saves working on consoles and PC has sold it for me! Was going to get the game at some point, but thats just pushed it to a day one purchase for me 🙂 need more games with cheevo’s on PC, can’t play my xbox when I’m with the missus, but can play on my laptop 😀
Someone convince me not to pre-order this because it’s all bad… even when it’s good.
