It’s easy to get lost when you’re swimming underwater in a video game. You’re moving in the right direction, but you look down for a moment, lose your bearings, swim some more and wind up back where you started. I guess you accidentally turned yourself around. Whoops!
Come on, that never happened to you? Not once?
One of the side missions in the new Dying Light expansion The Following removes this problem in a simple, clever way. The developers at Techland line the swimming path with markers that are orange on one side, blue on the other. You’ll see that in the video above or the shots below, all captured on my PS4.
If you’re swimming toward orange, you’re going the right way.
The blue on the other side can guide you back to where you started. That’s really helpful, given that you’ll sometimes need to come up for air and then have to dive back down while still heading in the same direction.
A nice bit of design there!
Note: despite what my captured screenshots imply, the mission here is not “Stranger in a Strange Land”. It’s “Strange Noises”. And it’s the only swimming mission in the expansion, best I can tell. One’s enough!

I’ve been playing Dying Light the last few days and I can’t believe that it wasn’t GOTY.
Best. Zombiegame. Ever.
Yeah I couldn’t get far into Dead Island before finding something more interesting to play, but Dying Light (pre this expansion thing) made me finish it, and pretty quickly. I feel it had flaws but they managed to capture whatever magic ingredients were needed to make it sticky. Like it was one of those games you can’t wait to get another chance to play when you are at work or whatever. Definitely the most surprising good value purchase I made around that time.
I’ve been desperate to play Dying Light since release, but it’s been so overpriced that I’ve refused to buy it. $80 USD for a game that’s almost a year old? Nope.
Dead Island was a rough diamond. It could have been amazing, but there were some real flaws that dragged it down. If Dying Light is half as good as i think it is, I’m going to put a lot of time into it.
$80? Cripes. I thought it was on Steam for like… $60US or something, including the recently-released expansion. c.c
It might be now. I haven’t looked for a while because it fell into the same stupid crap as Wolfenstein: The New Order. Ridiculous Australia Tax and no price drops. During the big Steam sales they would advertise a massive 50% discount. Making it only $40 USD in Australia a year after release. Fuck that. I’m not buying that on principle.
You must be ecstatic about the new fallout4 season pass at $79.95AU… sometimes i think my time as a “gamer” is getting to an end.
I got a friend to gift me a cd key bought from overseas. I did the same with Wolfenstein and I’ll be doing the same with Dying Light soon. I’m not paying almost double retail price on top of the bad exchange rate.
Australia Tax on video games can go eat a bag of razors. This is what makes piracy so popular. If I weren’t dedicated to supporting the devs I like, I’d have played it for free by now.
Here ya go. http://www.ozgameshop.com/m/page/dying-light
$26. That’s more like it.
Now I have to finish at least 2 huge games I’m in the middle of to justify buying another 50+ hour time sink.
Agreed. Would love a little more variety with the firearms though… could have a lot of fun with a Rocket Launcher in that game.
Boomerang !
Loved the original, am playing the following right now and the driving component can be a little clunky however. Still it’s awesome zombie goodness.
