We have casting details, we have Rita Repulsa, and now we have the first synopsis for Lionsgate’s upcoming Power Rangers movie. It’s not much, but it’s something.
Via today’s press release:
Saban’s Power Rangers follows five ordinary high school kids who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers before it is too late.
The film stars Dacre Montgomery (A Few Less Men) as Jason the Red Ranger, RJ Cyler (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl) as Billy the Blue Ranger, Naomi Scott (The 33) as Kimberly the Pink Ranger, Becky G (Empire) as Trini the Yellow Ranger, Ludi Lin (Monster Hunt) as Zack the Black Ranger, and Elizabeth Banks (Pitch Perfect, The Hunger Games franchise) as Rita Repulsa.
(Also, they’re clearly still expecting everyone to call it Saban’s Power Rangers> instead of Power Rangers. Good luck with that.)
The plot is remarkably generic at this point, and seems to boil down to “destiny, work together to save the day, power of friendship”. It’s definitely missing the rumoured craziness we’ve heard about. But it’s nice to see that the movie seemingly won’t be straying too far from the basic premise that everyone knows and loves when it comes to Power Rangers.
But I’m not sure about that bit where they have to overcome their “real-life issues” before suiting up as a team. There was something quite nice about the fact that the Power Rangers just sort of jumped right into heroics and built their bonds as friends as they progressed as heroes. Please don’t spend 70 per cent of this movie with them all sort of hating each other before begrudgingly teaming up to don their Sentai spandex, like almost every other superhero team-up movie.
Who am I kidding, the movie is absolutely going to do that. (Saban’s) Power Rangers is currently scheduled for release in March 2017.

I really hope they don’t waste time on the personal issues too. As for a generic plot, I don’t think that’s an issue with power rangers – I don’t think anyone who wants to see it is going to care 😛 It’s basically the plot of the first episode of power ranges anyway
It’s so going the way of the recent fantastic 4 movie, 1h30m of story that could have been told in 40m and 5m of “action” that should have taken 20m with no second act to speak of
Oh I remember watching the power rangers at school, we had a tv in the classroom and used to flick it over to watch before school started. Had such a crush on Amy Jo Johnson for a while when she was the pink power ranger.
So they’re not going with Adi Shankar’s version then? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vw5vcUPyL90
They were never going with Adi Shankar’s version. But a part of me really wishes they would.
It really does sound like a very generic “Heroes of Destiny” plot, complete with “Each person will have some specific personal problem that the power of friendship will overcome” subplot. They will also most likely unlock their latent power when they solve it. I also have no doubt that two characters will also have a fight near the end and one will say “Deal with it yourself then” and leave the team before coming back at the final battle with some witty remark. “You guys really can’t handle anything without me around can you?”
I guess we’ll see if they can make it something memorable or whether it’s just another bland Hollywood interpretation relying on nostalgia.
