Stardew Valley Creator Says There’s A Secret Nobody Has Found Yet

Pelican Town might seem like an idyllic countryside getaway, but don’t let that fool you. Stardew Valley is full of mysteries, some of which players may never see.

Over at PC Gamer, Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone has an interview where he dives into the development of Stardew Valley. While the whole thing is worth a read, the bit at the end of the article is of particular note:

PCG: Finally, are there any secrets in the game that you haven’t seen anyone find yet?

EB: Yes.

PCG: Yes?

EB: Yes.

PCG: And you’re not going to tell me what that is, probably?

EB: No, I won’t tell you. [Laughs] I haven’t told anyone.

PCG: Is it significant?

EB: It’s not super significant, but it’s kind of just so weird and obscure that I don’t know if anyone will ever do it.

Hmm. What could it be?

This is exactly what delights me so much about Stardew Valley. Yeah, tending to crops is addicting, raising livestock is fun and I have blast exploring the mines. But that’s not why I’ve sunk nearly 80 hours into the game and plan on putting in a few dozen more. What Stardew Valley does best is intrigue.

What are the weird moaning sounds you can hear at night? Who is the strange man on the beach, and why does he only appear during stormy nights? How do you get into the sewers? Why can’t you understand the mine Dwarf’s language? What’s the deal with the ancient civilisation that you seem to unearth piece by piece? How do you get to the parts of the map labelled ‘???’? What is the deal with the community centre creatures? Why is there a shrine in your farm? What are those weird buttons hiding around the town and what do they control?

Just the other day, I got to the end of the mines, only to be flabbergasted by the thing waiting for me at the end. And did you know that the Wizard has a secret room where you can go and change your appearance? I’m still learning small new things about the game every day, and it’s this sort of attention to detail that makes me love Stardew Valley.

Of course, now that this is all out there, it may just be a matter of time before an intrepid player finds exactly what Barone is talking about. We’ll keep an eye on what happens next.
