Ubisoft Steam Sale Bundle Costs More Than Buying Games Individually

Price of individual products: $US68.17 ($91). Your cost: $US99.99 ($133). Hmmmm.

Steam's running a big sale on Ubisoft games this weekend, and it's pretty exciting. Even newer games like Far Cry Primal have had their price tags trampled by mammoths and yelled at by weird frightened NPC dudes. The sale is definitely worth a look.

Buuuut all is not as it seems. In a couple places, bundles actually cost more than their individual components. Both the Ubisoft Prime Pack and the Assassin's Creed Pack suffer from this issue. So, you know, keep your eyes open.

Now, it's worth noting that Ubisoft isn't the first publisher to do this. On top of that, there's a chance they didn't even mean to do this. Applying across the board discounts to every game and then also discounting pre-existing bundles can result in some wacky numbers. It's tough to say what exactly happened here. That's not to say Ubisoft and Valve shouldn't be held responsible — and they should absolutely do something about it already — but still.

The moral of the story? If a Steam Sale is going on and you find yourself making eyes at a bundle from across the bar/Steam store frontpage, don't just click the buy button. Make sure individual game prices add up to match the bundle. Otherwise, well, that's money down the drain for you.

classic ubi, I wouldn't even give them the benefit of the doubt haha.

Interestingly, for once this isn't a sale where the Australia Tax isn't weighted against us.

For example, Assassin's Creed Black Flag is currently US$6.23 on the Australian store while the price is currently US$7.49 for US players.

They must have mixed up 'AU' and 'UA' for that one (Ukraine).

Happened a while back with Rockstar and LA Noire. Picked it up for $3.75 within 12 months of release during a sale on Steam. They ended up adjusting the price back up to about $12-15 after half a day being spammed on facebook and bargain sites (OzBargain). They never revoked my game or charged me any extra so I was happy.

Yeah, like ubisoft didn't mean to accidentally try to make more money wherever they could. wouldn't put it past anyone, thats just business

This happens most sales. There are normally a few bundles that cost more then the individuals combined. Ubisoft isn't the only one that this has happened for.

Ubisoft Prime Pack doesn't seem to exist on the Australian Steam store anyway.

As much as I hate ubisoft, it's likely this is down to poor promotional planning. Not something neferious.

Never attribute to malice what stupidity can easily explain.

Has anyone checked if there's some kind of rival cheaper deal on uplay they're trying to steer us towards? Does uplay still even exist? I can't remember my login

It’s tough to say what exactly happened here.

It's not tough at all. The bundle discount of 50% is off the standard price for the individual titles, not the discounted price of the individual titles. This happens on bundles from time to time, it's just a mistake of thinking the bundle discount applies on top of the individual game discounts.

Bloodborne goty is currently on sale and still more expensive than the base game plus the expansion.

Most times when you leave out the games in the bundle that you don't really want and won't ever play then it'll be cheaper to buy the ones you actually do want individually.

They only bundle it to increase the average spend, get you to hand over more of your cash for games you don't even want.
