There’s a lot of Transformers: Devastation lingering in Platinum Games’ latest cartoon-based beat-em up, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan. Watch us play through the game’s first mission and see for yourself

We’ve got the same cel-shaded art style that first popped up in Platinum’s poorly-received Legend of Korra game. A small number of missions meant to be tackled multiple times at different difficulty levels. Instead of giant robot weapon loadouts we get ninjitsu loadouts, but the concept is basically the same. Even some of the ninjitsu powers feature effects similar to those found in Devastation.

On the plus side, I loved Transformers: Devastation, and the familiarity that comes from similarity helps keep the controller in my hands. The game also nails the tone of the animated series quite well, showing the same level of care and attention to detail as Platinum did with Transformers. Somebody over there loves some TMNT.

The downside so far is that playing solo and controlling one of four turtles at a time can be a bit chaotic and mildly frustrating. Give me one giant robot over four mutant turtles any day. Better yet, give me four turtles that transform into one giant robot.

Here’s the first level in action.

I’ve played through the first four levels at this point, and I’m feeling it, but not quite feeling it. I need some more time. Hopefully it will all come together once the Xbox One version lets me play online with other people.
