One of my E3 highlights was when Ubisoft showed more of South Park: The Fractured But Whole, the ridiculously titled sequel to Stick of Truth. Everything they have said since then has been just as exciting.
For example, South Park maestros Trey Parker and Matt Stone confirmed later last week that unlike the first game, you won’t just be restricted to a boy character in The Fractured But Whole — you’ll be able to play as a girl, too. Naturally, this will have an effect on how your character interacts with Cartman and the other boys, which could be hilarious, if they handle it right.
Said Matt Stone in a delightful interview with Entertainment Weekly:
In Stick of Truth we got halfway through the game, and we had narratively come up with the big Girls’ Quest halfway through it. [The Girls] were a faction in the fantasy world. And then someone’s like, “What if you want to be a girl?” Narratively, it didn’t work. We’d have to sh — can the whole game. So we just left it the way it was. This time, we obviously wanted to add that.
But the boys are little boys, because it’s really a story about little boys running around. So they don’t care about [your character being a girl]? That seems weird. They always seemed to care about it in the show. Are they dumb about it, and they don’t know? So you’re in hiding? Or do they totally care about that, and totally treat you differently? So we ended up doing those things differently for different characters.
It actually turned out to be quite a bit more work. I’m also playing The Division — I’m not just saying that because it’s Ubisoft. I made the character look like my wife, just because I thought that was funny, running around New York shooting people looking like my wife. But the game doesn’t treat you that differently. The guys still shoot you. The game doesn’t really react that much differently. That’s cool for that kind of game. It’s been a funny journey to go through, introducing something that we thought would just be a cool feature. You’re a girl! But now they’re going to treat you different.
They have also switched up the combat system from Stick of Truth, adding grids and tactical decisions in what looks way more like Fire Emblem than Paper Mario.
I didn’t get to see the demo for Fractured But Whole — Ubisoft’s got us blacklisted and all — but I am beyond excited to play this game. In fact, it’s the first game I’ve ever pre-purchased. Mostly to get a copy of Stick of Truth on PS4. Worth it.

Oh thank god! Crisis averted.
One* crisis averted. There’s always something to complain about.
Well. PC Principle is in this game , so probably.
Can’t wait.
AM I DETECTING A MICROAGGRESSION BRO?!
BREAKING NEWS
Girl character is simply a palette swap of Boy character, does not contain individual merits.
eww, girls… seriously? don’t they have germs or something?
der terk er jerrrrrrrrrrrbs!!
So what’s the deal with the pre-order on this game. I’m interested in pre-ordering on PSN to get the Stick of Truth in the interim but it doesn’t appear to be showing up yet. Maybe with this week’s PSN update?
Yeah, I was just wondering the same thing.
According to this http://au.ign.com/articles/2016/06/13/e3-2016-south-park-the-stick-of-truth-coming-to-ps4-xbox-one it should be available right now. But looking at the PS Store, I can’t find The Fractured But Whole to pre-order it, nor can I find any reference to The Stick Of Truth on PS4, only the PS3 version.
I wonder if there’s been a delay or if Australia is getting shafted or what?
I’d also be interested to know if The Stick of Truth is available to buy on its own and what price. If it’s cheap-ish I might be tempted to just give that a go and avoid the whole pre-ordering thing.
Stick of Truth shows up as a XBOX One game under coming soon, but it’s only available in the bundle and there doesn’t seem to be a entry for Fractured But Whole. Hitting the link to the bundle gets a not found error. The interesting part is that the Stick of Truth entry specifically states that it’s a Fractured But Whole pre-order exclusive.
So it’s a Modern Warfare Remastered type situation?
Guess I’ll skip this just like I’m skipping that, then.
I’m not sure. It could just be this specific store entry for the game. From what I can gather Stick of Truth actually is free as a pre-order bonus. You don’t have to buy a special more expensive version of Fractured But Whole to get it.
I’m not really sure what to think. I guess they’ll give it away for free as a playable pre-order bonus, then sell it cheap on it’s own once Fractured But Whole comes out? I can’t imagine them porting the game to the XBOX One purely as a pre-order bonus.
I reckon it’s Australia getting shafted! Issues with censorship maybe?
Australia’s Fractured But Whole is getting shafted? :'(
*applause*
I think it comes down to pre-order (that we can do in Australia) and pre-purchase (that we cannot do in Australia). In the USA you can pay now for the game and thus start playing TSOT right now. It is not available here because Ubisoft does not want you to pre-order it, get TSOT and then cancel your order.
I have not heard anything official but i think this is the reason we can’t get nice things.
The reason for the delay in Australia would be that stick of truth is Australia is censored, so they will need to have a different version of the remastered game, and most likely the new game will be censored as well. Cause Straya…
Appears you can preorder at EBGames now and it includes download code for Stick of truth. Not sure if you get it when you preorder or when it releases though. https://ebgames.com.au/ps4-206779-South-Park-The-Fractured-But-Whole-Deluxe-Edition-PlayStation-4
