Because giants aren’t real and hurting actual horses is bad, the production team behind Game of Thrones had some challenges to overcome when drawing up and filming the show’s epic Battle of the Bastards.
Their solution, as you’ll see in the video below, was to let Australian VFX studio Iloura fake it by blending close-ups, actual crowd shots (which were then copy+pasted) and a ton of CGI. I mean, yes, you probably figured that’s how it was done, but it’s something else actually seeing it broken down like this. Really gives you an appreciation for not just the craft in what was created from scratch, but the way VFX teams are getting smarter at the way they knit real footage and computer-generated stuff together to make the whole thing look more impressive.
Fine Art is a celebration of the work of video game artists, showcasing the best of both their professional and personal portfolios.

Holy shit that is impressive.
I would love to see it just with skeletons, or Attack on Titan style with just the musculature for the entire clip.
still blows my mind how they can do this…fucking amazing
You think that is impressive, try sitting next to the guy running the crowd sims and being asked if I wanted to know the armies involved…
Don’t do GoT, but I could watch compositing all day long. That was very nice.
