It’s been 10 years: what’s two more months? Publisher Square Enix has briefed certain people on the corporate level of the US retail chain GameStop that Final Fantasy XV will now come out on November 29, according to a number of sources. The highly anticipated RPG was previously scheduled for September 30.
The news of this apparent delay was first reported last night by the website Gamnesia, citing sources at GameStop. Kotaku has also heard from a separate GameStop source that Square has indeed briefed some people at the corporate level about the new November 29 release date.
A second, non-retail source familiar with the game also confirmed the delay.
Don’t start calling 30 GameStops to try to disprove this rumour, though — most stores have not yet been briefed on the delay. Many GameStops have already received Final Fantasy XV standees showing the old September release date, with instructions to put them up Sunday night or Monday morning. Soon, they will likely receive stickers with the new release date.
In response to some internet scepticism, Gamnesia published this image, which matches other marketing materials Kotaku has seen, instructing GameStop employees to change the date on their Final Fantasy XV displays:
Before you get upset, know this: Delays are almost universally a good thing for everyone (except maybe the business people). Rumours had been floating around for a while now that Final Fantasy XV was in rough shape from a technical perspective, and two months is a huge amount of time for optimization and polish. If true, this delay will likely lead to a better game.
Square Enix did not return a request for comment. (In fairness, it’s Sunday.)

Unless you own No Mans Sky on pc…
No they’re not. Not delaying when they should is definitely worse, but delays suck.
Until SE says anything, I’m just going to assume this is a successful troll/prank :T
Again, Jason? I’d really appreciate it if you could stop delaying all of these games ?
Thanks, Squeenix.
Good.
Honestly, I do not see the point in getting upset over delays. They obviously must need the extra time to make sure everything is up to scratch, so I’m glad that they have taken the time to sort everything out.
I can understand being a little upset at first, but a very minor inconvenience to you that results in a superior end result is a far better outcome than not delaying and either:
A) releasing a buggy / unstable game, or
B) forcing the developers into crunch-time to release on schedule just tobtry and please their impatient fans
*high pitched whine* But I want it nooooowwwwwwww!
Nice theory, although a lot of delayed games still come out buggy, unstable games. Also, dont think the devs are not crunching it right up to the new release date. They’re probably working on the day one patch that will inevitibly be released to fix the multitude of issues with their release to manufacture build.
Just means I’ll be buying my PS4 closer to Christmas and the Persona 5 western release then, which I’m fine with.
Still hoping they put out a FFXV edition PS4.
Perhaps they took a good hard look at the combat system, realised it was rubbish, & gave themselves 2 months to alter everything into a respectable turn-based system that would do the series proud…?
Hey, I can dream… ;-p
I know delays result in higher-quality games, but I am a bit miffed, since I pre-ordered FF15 to be a birthday present to myself. Now it’s like, early Christmas present or somethin’.
Does anyone else find it a bit odd / funny that just a couple of months ago Square held an entire E3-style press conference just to tell the world that the game was coming in September…?
What an absolute mess this game has been to think that after ten years it still needs delays. This is example numero uno as to why you shouldn’t reveal your games early or give them release dates before they’re done. Also, while we’re at it, can we not give DLC to a game that’s spent the better part of a decade in development hell? Your game isn’t even out the door and you’re already thinking of ways to screw more people out of their money….
Yes because my arm is being bent behind my back by the SE Mob while they are forcing me to buy a cheap season pass on the PS store.
Please direct your death threats to @JASONSCHREIER
Before one of you mods deletes this it’s obviously a joke about No Man’s Sky.
Definitely needs a Polish, that screenshot shows his weapon going through his hand..
Two months and they fix that right up.
I never have a problem with a game being delayed for the sake of more polish. In this age of updates, especially ‘day one’ updates, it’s actually refreshing to get a more polished product on the disc.
The original release date is too close to Forza Horizon 3 for my liking anyway, I wasn’t going to be touching FFXV for a while anyway because of that.
