Overwatch launched its first seasonal event today, and with it comes the new gameplay mode Lúcioball. As an introduction to Overwatch’s Summer Games, Lúcioball will have players battling it out on a “futuristic soccer field” in a Rocket League-esque seasonal soccer brawl set in Rio de Janeiro.
Lúcioball from PlayStation’s blog
Overwatch’s Assistant Game Director Aaron Keller elaborates on the PlayStation blog:
Overwatch’s spin on soccer places you in a fast-paced, 3v3 match featuring Lúcio. Players will hit the field in Rio de Janeiro, punching, bouncing, booping, and wall-riding their way to the goal. Understanding how Lúcio’s abilities affect the ball is the key to mastering Lúcioball. For this brawl, his primary fire has been replaced with a melee attack, allowing Lúcio to punch the ball — perfect for dribbling, passing, and shooting from short range. When you need to launch the ball across the map, Lúcio’s secondary attack emits a blast of sound that gets the job done nicely.
Unlike other game modes, the speed boost from Lúcio’s song only affects himself (Amp It Up will still increase that boost for Lucio, as it does normally), and Lúcio’s ultimate ability, Sound Barrier, now pulls the ball toward him.
Fans are already going crazy over the new gameplay mode, comparing it to Rocket League, wall-riding and all.
Lúcioball comes as a part of Overwatch’s Summer Games, in which players can earn limited edition Loot Boxes between today and August 22. New emotes, sprays, player icons, highlight intros and skins (even legendary ones!) will accompany the event. Keller explains that, when players earn or purchase Loot Boxes for the next few weeks, they will receive at least one Summer Games limited edition item.
Check out a stream of Lúcioball here. Blizzard says that more limited-edition items, maps and modes are in store for the future.

Oh this is bollocks. What a stupid, lame, gimmicky cash grab. *proceeds to punch in paypal details while sobbing uncontrollably*
You said it, but we were all thinking it.
Cash grab? No one is forcing you to buy loot boxes…
Since its limited to August 22nd, you could only argue its a promotion if their wasn’t a payment option. It’s a cash grab. all you need is the incentive really.
It’s so tacked on, surprised at blizz for this obvious cash grab.
Edit: Thought it was an official partnership, disregard comment*
The influence of Activision over Blizzard is almost complete. Soon we will see Call of Duty: Warcraft Warfare, and StarGuitar HeroCraft.
or a bit of diverse fun/joke aimed at the Olympic’s expense, while giving players something rather different than the normal predictable fun. Which just so happens to have things which players might want to pay more for, if they get sick of trying to earn. Instead of just charging us a DLC fee. How dare they… er not everything is a grand corporate conspiracy.
Why is it a cash grab when you can earn everything in game for free by playing the game?
Cash grab? Lol what? How is this free update a cash grab?
Dont understand why its a cash grab.. The game mode looks cool to try..
Dont need to buy lootboxes lol
Yeah wow… This has to be the least impressive update I’ve seen across any/all of Blizzard’s games.
If it’s anything like Bombing Run in Unreal Tournament 2k4 then I think it’s time to jump back into Overwatch for a while.
now if only they make loot boxes more reliable (IE have it so they are less likely to give us what we already have) or have it so there is a random factor so we get them more often and have them act like loot boxes should… a welcomed and random surprise. Opening one and getting three greys and a blue, most of which you already have, is not welcomed or a surprise.
In other news I want that Tracer skin.
Agreed. Nothing worse than opening a loot box and getting nothing but sprays (which I NEVER use) and a voice line.
If you’re getting duplicates then you’re earning gold so you can buy what you specifically want then.
sadly only like 5 isnt? after two weeks of saving I have only 75 gold from copies. Only another month or two I can afford to buy what I am saving up for and only if the RNJ is nice to me. So yes in theory you are right but its barely predictable and its rarely enough to buy anything.
For every duplicate you get something like 50 gold piece and sometimes I’ve gotten chest which contained 500 gold. That’s how I realistically have the skins I want for my mains I buy them with the in-game stuff. Won’t lie, it obviously is longer but by the time you’re rank 50(pug) you should have either earned legit or have enough to buy 2-3 skins of your mains the most expensive ones.
Gold is based on the rarity of the duplicate.
Grey is 5
Blue is 15
Purple is 50
Legendary is 200
…didn’t Lucio play hockey?
Roadhog is doing? Diving? Pole vault?
Long jump where the sand pit is replaced with mud.
Those Tracer skins would be pretty decent if it didn’t have those unnecessary flag capes, ah well.
Oh hey it’s more Blast Ball 😛
