Overwatch’s competitive mode has been a divisive subject for much of its first season, but Blizzard stated upfront that change is in the cards. Season two is just around the corner.
Blizzard announced that season one will end on August 18 at 10:00AM AEST. Season two is currently scheduled to kick off on September 6, but that could change depending on how long it takes Blizzard to implement various improvements. Among other things, that will include alterations to the skill rating system to make it feel less disheartening and the total elimination of sudden death rounds.
If took a crack at season one, you won’t be leaving empty handed. Even if all you did was complete your placement matches, you’ll get a special spray and player icon. If you made it into the top 500 in your region, you’ll nab an additional player icon and an animated (!!!) spray.
NOW FOR THE PART ABOUT GOLDEN GUNS, which is probably why anyone is actually here. With the season’s conclusion comes competitive point distribution. You can use competitive points to buy golden weapon skins. Here’s how points will be allocated based on your skill rating:
- SR 0-39: 10 CPs
- SR 40-45: 20 CPs
- SR 46-49: 40 CPs
- SR 50-52: 60 CPs
- SR 53-55: 80 CPs
- SR 56-59: 120 CPs
- SR 60-64: 200 CPs
- SR 65+: 300 CPs
Have you played in Overwatch’s first competitive season? What do you think? What’s the highest rank you’ve achieved?

So you need 100 to get a single golden gun?
I started at 50 but a streak of crappy teammates now I am sitting on 39.
“Skill rating” is a misdemeanor, it doesn’t matter how well you do if your team are just running around like headless chickens.
And so I am gonna walk away with 10 points… Less then I got just shifting up and down in ranks, pretty useless really. It’d be far better if they had a “CP Store” where you could trade various amounts of CP for loot boxes, skins, or various other lower cost goodies.
Worry not, you get points based on the highest rank achieved… Phew (I’m in a similar boat)
Ah that takes a little more sting off it. Just hope they add more options then just golden guns, down the track.
Except its 300CP for a golden skin, not 100. But hey, you’ll get 60CP (same boat as me) so its a start!
Oh thats good to know, after reading this I was about to stop playing ranked and hold onto my 54, but never fear I shall continue to run the gauntlet
one of the most soul destroying gaming experiences in ages. they really need to look at the whole deleveling process, because nothing quite motives one to keep playing something to loss everything you worked so hard to gain in a night and more, just because other idiots think they are doing quick play or worse, leave.
there is no reason to force people to delevel, it achieves nothing, especially when a lot of the time the results are out of your personal hands.
having individual skill rating in a game where team effort is emphasised is not very well thought out.
Specially when a string of terrible team mates can pull you way down..
They should make competitive mode solely 6v6.. It is not made for solo queuers..
Competitive is so very frustrating.
I’ve gone backwards and forwards between 34 and 37 for pretty much the entire season.
Oh cool! I’ve almost finished my placement matches!
Just hit 60 the other day, now i’m a little worried i might drop to 59 but the goal of 65 seems doable, problem is I seem to meet a lot of rank 70s and top 500s in my rank
Well this is a punch to the throat. Along with their obnoxious business practices its pretty hard to feel happy with the game.
Haha i would have got more cp if i never played after my placement matches
Yeah I’m thinking I’ll just leave it for now and reap those sweet points…
I got as high as 73 before idiot teammates decided to play the game like Call of Duty.
