The Myst Team’s New Game Obduction Starts Strong

I still don’t really know what’s going on in Obduction, the new game from the folks behind legendary adventure game Myst, but I’m extremely intrigued.

Obduction is a spiritual successor to the likes of Myst and Riven, and it shows. You can watch me play the first 15 minutes of it in the above video.

The game wastes no time in transporting you to an alien world sprinkled with touchstones of our own, and the first question it begs is all too familiar: “What the hell is going on here?”

The short, spoiler-free answer is “bad shit.” Bad shit has been happening for centuries, apparently, and this world is either a sanctuary or a prison, depending on who you talk to.

Oh, and in case you thought the game looked too modern, I should point out that characters are given life by glorious FMV. It actually works pretty well, all things considered.

Obduction is a game about two things: world-building and puzzle-solving. I didn’t do any puzzles in the above video because I didn’t want to spoil them, but suffice it to say, they’re as opaque as ever.

So far, I’m very impressed by Obduction. You can grab it on Steam right now.
