Our Favourite Games From August

August was a busy month for video games! From much-anticipated big titles to smaller fan games, here were some of our favourite games from August.

This latest expansion for Hearthstone has players fighting party-crashing demons.

No Man’s Sky

No Man’s Sky might not be the ultimate video game, but we enjoyed our time with it. Players might not be able to see each other, but they saw a lot of creatures ranging from the cool to the NSFW. If you’re still getting your bearings in the game, you can check out our tips.

This short, challenging puzzle game belies a beautiful world worth exploring.

Layers of Fear: Inheritance

The DLC for the surprisingly good horror game Layers of Fear scared the pants off us.

Deus Ex Go

This complex and satisfying mobile puzzle game does a great job interpreting Deus Ex elements into the Hitman Go and Lara Croft Go formulas.

AM2R

This fan remake of Metroid II didn’t last long before getting a DMCA from Nintendo, but we had a good time with it when we had it.

Inversus

In this simple-looking strategy shooter, players change the colour of the board as they go to challenge their enemies.

Metroid Prime: Federation Force

This Metroid spinoff doesn’t seem like a Metroid game, but it’s a smartly-designed and surprisingly strategic shooter.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

Adam Jensen’s latest adventure is smaller than Human Revolution but has a wonderful hub area. It can be a bit quirky both in terms of gameplay and architecture, but it’s beautiful. You can check out our tips here.

The King of Fighters XIV

This long-running franchise has shed some charisma with its transition to 3D, but it’s still a lot of fun.

Hatsune Miku: Project Diva X

Project Diva X is shorter than other Hatsune Miku games, but it makes up for it with an engaging story mode.

Pokemon Uranium

This fan-made Pokemon game nine years in the making got removed from the internet pretty quickly, but you can check out us playing it here.

Attack on Titan: Wings of Freedom

This game has great movement that makes the notion of fighting for your life against unfeeling monsters hell-bent of devouring humanity seem like fun.

Madden 17

Madden 17’s Play of the Moment feature gives players control over the parts of the game that matter and has gotten us playing it regularly again.

Style Savvy: Fashion Forward

This game lets players create their hip young female avatar and then transports them to a place where they can enjoy multiple high-pressure creative positions without being driven completely insane.

This long-awaited expansion is a very good problem for WoW fans, with some lovely widescreen loading graphics to boot.

Four Sided Fantasy

This unique puzzle sidescroller changes what it means to run off the screen.

Hitman Episode 4

Hitman’s latest episode, Bangkok, returns to the colourful, complex levels of previous installments, plus it has some pretty interesting NPCs.

This new game from the creators of Myst is as confusing as you’d expect.

Valley

This story of an archaeologist obsessed with uncovering an ancient artifact of great and terrible power has great movement.
