Super Mario Maker is coming to Nintendo 3DS on 2 December 2016.
The 3DS game, released on Wii U last year, comes with 100 built-in courses. You can also play courses designed on the Wii U version of Super Mario Maker, although not all will be compatible. You also won’t be able to search for courses by Course ID.
Also, unlike the Wii U version, Super Mario Maker for 3DS’s social functions, like sharing and designing courses, will be available primarily through local wireless and Street Pass. However, except for the “mystery mushroom,” every course-design tool on the Wii U version will be available on the 3DS’s Super Mario Maker.

TLDR
Seems it would be obvious that they could have added graphics modes for the Super Mario Land games. Instead it’s just a cutdown version of the WiiU game I already have, so I see no reason to buy it.
It’s definitely for the people who have a 3DS but not a WiiU, which as I understand, are millions and millions.
Nintendo, everybody. Give them a hand.

Due to system limitations, created levels will now be randomly deleted 4 hours after upload on average.
I was really excited for a minute and now I’m totally disappointed – hopefully an NX version is an improvement
