Listen To Adam West Sing The Strange Song That Was The Original Climax To Batman: Return Of The Caped Crusaders

Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders has a lot of homages to the 1966 show — but according to its writer, there was one more great big one that didn’t make it into the final movie. And it was definitely one of the weirdest references they could’ve found.

Writer Michael Jelenic talked to us at New York Comic Con about the third act that had to be reworked because of music rights:

One thing, and I don’t know if it didn’t fit or we couldn’t afford it, but Adam West sings a song called “Miranda” in the ’60s, he sings it as Batman. It’s sort of this poppy song and we were sort of trying to build the whole third act around him singing this 50-year-old pop song. I don’t know if it was popular at the time or not. We just couldn’t get the rights to it. It was either we paid for that song to be in the movie or we paid for the classic “Na na na na na”. So you can guess which one we picked.

Here’s the song, as sung by Adam West:

The iconic theme music was definitely the better choice.
