Overwatch game director Jeff Kaplan is full of surprises. For example, it turns out that he’s a Hanzo apologist. And, at one point, he considered a cat in a jetpack as an original Overwatch hero. There’s still time, my man. We want that cat hero.
Yesterday, in an interview with GameSpot, Kaplan revealed a few more tasty info morsels. Here are some highlights:
- New hero development will go at the same pace it has, which is roughly every four months, because “I think we need to take a step back from hero development in Overwatch and really evaluate what it does to the meta”.
- Blizzard contacted the girl who insulted another kid by calling him a “Hanzo main”. Kaplan told GameSpot, “The parents sent back this lovely letter to us and said, ‘We appreciate it so much that you guys reached out. We’ve been talking to our daughter about not making fun of somebody for maining a certain hero.’”
- They also considered a hero that “was this jetpack and it had this cat that laid in it, like a cat does. Then every once in a while it would paw at the controls. It was a cat in a jetpack.”
- Kaplan prefers Hanzo to Genji, adding that, no, Genji will never get patched out.

Those parents are awesome. Gold star sticker for them.
I would have loved to have played that cat. I think it would have fitted – overwatch has a rather diverse set of characters, why not a hilarious cute cat?
The “Cat in a jetpack that occasionally paws at the controls” did make it into the game, her name is “D.Va”.
Haha so true!
