It’s Fun Watching Streamers Rage-Quit The Same Game

Getting Over It‘s Steam description is brief. “A game I made for a certain kind of person,” it reads. “To hurt them.” Having watched multiple streamers howl in despair and rage-quit right at the end of it, I think it’s safe to declare the game an unmitigated success.

A purposefully awkward-to-control climbing simulator/test of humanity’s will to carry on in times of incomprehensible darkness from the maker of QWOP, Getting Over It is meant to make you feel things. Rage, mainly. Still, the very end of it is brutal even by its own misanthropic standards. In short, you pull yourself up one final tower, at which point you enter an anti-gravity pocket and float into space.

However, it’s possible to screw that part up, even after you’ve “won”. A handful of streamers have found that out the hard way.

Bucklington‘s exquisite failure is easily the best of the batch. Just as his background music, “Space Oddity” by David Bowie, crescendos and he nearly ascends into the sky, he manages to propel himself over the tower and into a ravine of screaming despair. “WHAT THE FUCK JUST HAPPENED,” he yells at the top of his lungs. Meanwhile, David Bowie softly croons in the background. “You really made the grade,” he sings.

Distortion got even closer to finishing the game, but he celebrated too soon, causing him to slam right into a rock he needed to go around. That was his undoing. “Well, whatever,” he said after hitting cold earth. “I’m done with this game. I’m not gonna do any more.”

MoonMoon was so close to getting around the rock and reaching his namesake. But then: Nah. And oh jeez, what a fall.

Here’s Shroud, who is used to being absurdly good at games such as CSGO and PUBG, giving off an aura of “fuck this” so powerful that I’m pretty sure aliens felt it.

Finally, I want to give special recognition to Korean player 김도, who did not make it to the end, but who’d been playing for 14 hours when his hammer glitched, becoming wedged in a rock like Excalibur. Ultimately, he had to start over. Watching the clip, it’s hard not to feel legitimately bad for him. It was a good effort, dude. You’ll get ’em next time, unless you choose to quit this game forever and throw your PC off a mountain, which would also be a perfectly reasonable thing to do at this point.
