Kratos has an obvious connection to the Avengers, but there’s a more subtle one lurking in the new God of War: Turns out the game has its own Infinity Gauntlet.
Play through Sindri’s Family Business quest and you’ll get your hands on an accessory called the Shattered Gauntlet of Ages. It has three sockets and a vague description: “An ancient relic of Hel deemed too powerful to remain whole, fragments of its former strength lie scattered throughout the realms.”
As it turns out – spotted by Redditors such as moxxxxxi – this is one wonderful reference to Thanos, the purple-headed antagonist of Avengers: Infinity War. There are six enchantments that correspond to the gauntlet, each one based on a different Infinity Stone:
- Andvari’s Soul – Soul Stone
- Njord’s Temporal Stone – Time Stone
- Eye of the Outer Realm – Space Stone
- Ivaldi’s Corrupted Mind – Mind Stone
- Asgard’s Shard of Existence – Reality Stone
- Muspelheim Eye of Power – Power Stone
Put three of these stones into the gauntlet and you’ll be able to truly cosplay as Thanos:
Given that God of War came out just a week before Infinity War – and given that Kratos’ core mechanic is borrowed from a certain blond Avenger – this is a fun little bit of cross-pollination. Now if only Thor would get an axe.

Still in the early stages of the game (just got light of alfheim) and don’t much care for the avengers but this is some amazing work! I find myself getting excited even though i only passively follow the avengers n stuf.
Wtf… Kratos is Greek? Thor is Norse? Where is this obvious connection to Marvel as well?
Kratos is living in Midgard, and he can throw and call back his axe ala Thor with his hammer..
Seriously dude. It’s not hard to connect the dots here..
How is that borrowed from Marvels Thor? It’s borrowing Norse mythology. Not comic book space vikings.
Oh, you must be talking about Perun, the Slavic God of War with a magical axe that can be thrown and called back. ^_-
He killed all the Greek gods. He needed to go somewhere to find more gods to kill …
I can’t wait until he goes to mess with the gods of Egypt. How about the Inca? There are so many great possibilities!
There’s also a great little line where Atreus riffs on Hulk’s ‘puny God’ line from Avengers and says something about the power of Gods and calls the troll they just killed a ‘puny troll’.
Having written that it doesn’t sound like a riff, but that’s what came to mind!
Spoiler: it is 100% a Hulk reference
Hey Jason,
You might want to remove the gif/video clip. It contains spoilers.
Ps. Love splitscreen.
Thanks for that; I’ve put a spoiler banner close to the top.
