Tekken 6 Review: The Lag Of Iron Fist
October 30th, 2009 at 1:43 PM“PS3 is a free service which comes with a horrid lag-fest experience to match the freeness of it.”
That is ridiculous. All of these games are peer to peer. That means the consoles just talk to each other once the game is going (bypassing the online service). All the service does is matchmaking. Its ignorance like that which keeps people paying Microsoft for providing a service that should be free.
Junglist Axed In Good Game Reshuffle
October 24th, 2009 at 1:48 AMYeah, the double act is what made the show for me. We will see I guess. I just hope this isnt like Morgan Webb on X-Play. That was painful.
Reader Review: Brütal Legend
October 24th, 2009 at 1:31 AMYeah the gameplay was pretty interesting. I actually didnt mind how they mashed up the action/adventure stuff and the RTS. My only complaint is the AI is far too easy.
I actually found the story really let me down once you left the Bladehenge region (and go to the mountains). It becomes pretty linear and seems like they had to squish the last 3/4 of the game into the last half. Also I didn’t like the Goth land much, compared to the glorious metalness of Bladehenge.
I just rented it, and I think most people should. Its not really worth the full price of the game. Maybe wait till its on sale somewhere. Its a pitty because it had so much potential. I think if they had stuck with the zelda dynamic of collecting solos (items) and such, that would have been a lot more solid basis for the gameplay.

Super Street Fighter IV Confirmed, Is Standalone Title
September 30th, 2009 at 1:40 PMPeople are complaining because if they dont buy it, and there is no online compatability (which may or may not happen) between the games, then people playing Sf4 will be stuck with less people to play with (which in AUS isnt many at the moment).

Lucasarts Unveils Lucidity, An Original Platformer
September 12th, 2009 at 3:03 PMOh Wow, I was going to work on a game with this exact gameplay idea once my current one was finished. Oh well, other ideas await!
Blizzard "Looking Into" Aussie StarCraft II Servers
September 10th, 2009 at 1:03 AMI have a strong feeling that Starcraft 2 will be peer to peer like pretty much every other RTS game made (including all of Blizzard’s other ones). With this in mind, I dont really see what “Australian Servers” would be… authentication servers? We can authenticate to America fine, lag isnt an issue.
Unless I’m missing something?

Blizzard: Lack Of StarCraft Lan Is "No Big Deal"
August 24th, 2009 at 2:45 PMSeeing as Starcraft works on a peer to peer network topology (I assume the sequel does as well, most RTS games do), then I don’t really see a problem with the lack of LAN support.
The game will use local traffic, it will just authenticate with battle.net when you start it up. This authentication uses such a small amount of data, pretty much any net connection could do it. Tether up your iPhone or whatever.
As for firewalls, well that is a separate issue, though that would have to be a fairly draconian one to block this kind of data.
I can see a pirated version being released that has integrated LAN play though, and then yes, this would probably create more piracy rather then less. When that happens though, there is always the option of adding LAN play in a patch.
Valve Not Even Bothering With The PS3 Any More
August 15th, 2009 at 1:30 AMIts not so much the hardware that he has problems with, its Sony’s lack of good development tools from what I can gather from comments he has made. Also developing on the SPUs requires a completely different approach to generic multicore development, so you cant easily just port from multicore to the Cell architecture. ID Tech 5 works on both, but those guys are masters at that kind of thing.

Snapshot: This Man Squishes Orcs For A Living
August 14th, 2009 at 5:01 PMHah yeah, that name rang some bells and I quickly realised why. PC POWERPLAY. Too bad I traded in my subscription for website like Kotaku a while ago :)
If I were a lesser man I would suspect some sort of advertising-for-mates conspiracy here ;)
Indie Games Festival Kicks Off In Melbourne Tomorrow
August 14th, 2009 at 1:37 AMWas thinking about going when they first announced. I went to one a few years back, was pretty fun and educational. Seems like they have downgraded in terms of venue and speakers this year (Greg Costikyan was there the year I went, and Jon Blow the year after).
Maybe if it gets bigger for next time again I can justify the flight over.

First Look At A Proper Prince Of Persia Movie Poster
July 22nd, 2009 at 5:34 PMYeah the typeface doesn’t do anything for me. Would have benefitted from a lack of disney branding as well.
Giving Voice To The Old Republic
July 20th, 2009 at 12:05 PMDid they get Wolverine (from the new animated series) to do the voice of the bounty hunter there? Seems just a little too gruff.
Its an interesting idea, though I hope the gameplay is as interesting. I also cant shake the feeling that they are going to have less content because of all the voice acting. I mean content in terms of areas to explore, not story stuff.
Also it seems like they are foregoing endgame content for re-playability (in that all the classes had different quests).

Monday Musings: Shooting For The Future
July 13th, 2009 at 4:39 PMI agree. TF2 was great fun until I had to start grinding to get unlocks. It’s still fun, but I feel like I am missing out without having those guns.
But yeah like most people say, they are really just taking some of the systems that RPGs tend to use and putting them in Shooters. You can have RPGs without leveling systems and equipment upgrades, and those things do not make a shooter into an RPG.

Think Of Dragon Age As A Massively Single-Player RPG
July 10th, 2009 at 4:18 PMWell it’d be opt in I guess, so you dont have to use it.
The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall Goes Free
July 10th, 2009 at 4:10 PMThis sounds like the perfect candidate for bittorrent. When will developers learn? They can still serve it at 5k/s off their server, but through a torrent, which would allow everyone else to share the load as well.
So, How Many IPhone Games Are There?
July 9th, 2009 at 7:44 PMAs an iphone developer, this depresses me. I am very worried that my game will fall into the sea of crap out there. I tried a ton of games but they were all crap. The only good ones I can find are ones we all know are good already. I cant find many more, and I cant believe that there aren’t any more on there. If I, someone who wants to find these games with a passion, cant find them, how is someone casually looking supposed to?
