You Ever Run into Your Ex?

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 11:40 PM on August 23, 2007

To: Crecente
From: Bashcraft

Glad to see you made it to Germany, Bird Shirt and all.

Had to run a few errands and needed to swing by Yodobashi Camera in Umeda to pick up some crap for my computer. As I was making a beeline through the store, I saw a woman descending down the elevator. An ex-girlfriend. Not just someone I dated once or twice, but someone I lived with for a few months light years ago.

Nice enough girl. We got on decent enough. She was, however, a hostess. Not really a concept I understood when I moved in with her. At that time, I was still rather green Japan-wise and young and really didn't give a toss. So when she said her job was to pour drinks for old men, I just kinda wrote it off as a Japanese custom! The short of it: I was young, she was young, it didn't work out. She didn't want to quit — the money was too good. And the entire situation started to weird me out, her being in her early twenties and pulling in ten grand a month.

I decided to move out. Met Mrs. Bashcraft. At a bookstore. We became inseparable. Started writing professionally around that time. Things started happening.

Pro Evo Coming To Wii, Bringing Wiggle, Waggle

proevo08logo.jpgAnnounced yesterday at Leipzig, Konami's Pro Evo football series will be returning to a Nintendo home console for the first time in aaaaages with a Wii version of Pro Evo 8. Sound good? There's a couple of catches. First, it's running later than the other versions, and won't be ready until Q1 2008. Second, all the press release really mentions is waggle control. No word on anything like online multiplayer or how many leagues/teams it's going to feature. That's not to say it won't feature all of that, just...hold your horses until we get more info. Kojima Not Tired Of 360 Questions, Favours Unified Platform

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 11:00 PM on August 23, 2007

148.jpeg Kojima Productions just posted a podcast conversation between Hideo Kojima, Assassin's Creed producer Jade Raymond and AC creative director Patrice Desilets. The chat runs about twenty minutes — 8 of which is them saying how much they dig each other's games. Though, there is some grist towards the end when KP's Ryan Payton puts forth the PS3/Xbox 360 cross-platform question, asking if they like the rumours and speculation. While Patrice says he personally finds it "fun," Jade adds:

We want to make the best game possible that can be enjoyed by the most people possible. For us, its obviously a bigger challenge to ship simultaneously on both consoles, because they are not the same. But it's also worth while if that means more people can play the game, so I think that's ultimately our objective. To just get it out there to as many people as possible.
Payton then turns around and asks his boss Hideo Kojima if he's tired of people that keep asking whether MGS4 will be on both platforms. Kojima's response?

IBM Discovers Second Life

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 10:30 PM on August 23, 2007

ibm_pc.jpg Shhhhhhhh! Second Life might be getting a bit of a backlash, but don't tell IBM. The computer co. is enamoured with SL. It's the future they say! IBM opened its virtual SL Business Center earlier this spring in order to provide sales and support services. According to IBM director of Global Web Strategy & Innovation Maggie Blayney:

The real reason why we're doing this is because we do feel the beginning of a major transformation on how people are going to interact on the Web — going from a flat to an immersive experience... It's not going to replace the two-dimensional Web but it's going to integrate and complement it.
Welcome to last year.

Maybe Track & Field Won't Suck After All

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 10:20 PM on August 23, 2007

ITFcute.jpgFirst news of New International Track & Field left me indifferent. Second news is tipping the scales in favour of a positive reception. What am I basing this on? Pretty much the game's playable character roster, which is up on the newly-launched official site. No real athletes here. Note the inclusion of an adorable Pyramid Head. Or, better yet, Sparkster! I've got so many good memories of Rocket Knight Adventures I could knit them into a blankie and just wrap myself in it. Whether the guy can throw a javelin is another matter, but I'd like to think he could manage.

Will Sonic Riders Zero Gravity Be Good? Watch This.

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 10:00 PM on August 23, 2007

Finally, a Sonic game with attitude!! It's even created by Team Sonic. That means there is a slight chance this game won't destroy any fond lingering childhood memories I have of that blue hedgehog. Man, I hope this game has no human kissing. And that the controls aren't wonk. And that it's not shitty.

Cheap Ass Gamer Responds To Circuit City Subpoena

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 9:50 PM on August 23, 2007

cagwatermark2.jpg As we mentioned previously, electronics retail giant Circuit City subpoenaed video game shopping community CheapAssGamer.com. Circuit City is demanding that CAG turn over information about registered member Speedy1961, who has been posting CC ads on the site before they are released. Today, CAG Productions CEO CheapyD (aka"David Abrams") has posted Circuit City's complaint, which is the basis for its subpoena. CAG has responded: CheapyD has filed an objection to this action — a "Motion to Quash" the subpoena based on procedural errors made by CC's legal eagles, such as failing to include certain documents. What's more, it seems that CAG Productions, a New York Limited Liability Corporation, is out of the Virginia court's jurisdiction, where the suit was filed. Circuit City needs a commission to a New York court.

PGR4 Coming October 2 (US), October 12 (Europe)

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 9:30 PM on August 23, 2007

vantagev8.jpgMicrosoft just sent word that Project Gotham Racing 4 is nearly done, and will be released in the US on October 2 and in Europe on October 14. It'll go for $US60. Not content with just this vital information, they also sent along a list of ten more cars that will feature in the game, as well as nine more bikes. Which normally wouldn't excite me, but I've got a thing for Aston Martins, so the 2005 Vantage V8's inclusion is good news. Rest of the new additions are only a click away.

Crytek Wii Game Plans? "Maybye In 3 Or 4 Years"

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 9:00 PM on August 23, 2007

arecibo_observatory.jpg PC shooter Crysis developer Crytek has loads of ideas in the pipeline. Loads! The developer already has an entire team dedicated to the PS3. According Cryteck honcho Cevat Yerli, the studio even has a "separate" room creating "some secret technologies...which are not related to the CryEngine 2." Crytek also has an Xbox 360 title in the works. It's not a FPS and a "complete departure" from the studio's titles Crysis and Far Cry. What about the Wii? Yerli answers:

We have Wii development but it's very small, it's more like testing ideas. We don't have a project at this stage... Nintendo Wii is certainly on the radar, we will do something for Nintendo Wii — the question is when. I think some time maybe in three or four years, but nobody knows when.
That's a pretty big radar you got there, Yerli.

Former Sega Campaign Girl "Live Face" Mask

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 8:30 PM on August 23, 2007

oguramask.jpg Just because space cadet Yuko Ogura is no longer Sega's "image character" doesn't mean we can't post non-news about her. Oh no. Once a SEGA spokesperson, always a SEGA spokesperson! Above is a an official Yuko Ogura LIVE MASK. Just take a gander at that! Are you creeped out? We are totally creeped out. And it takes a lot to creep us out.

Eds Note: To bring everyone up to speed, Yuko Ogura was a two-time SEGA "image character" and even appeared in a SEGA produced kids' show. Ogura claimed to be from an apple-shaped star called Korin, but has since shied away from that nutty claim realising that people don't take seriously girls who say they're aliens. SEGA has since replaced Ogura with the more normal Satomi Ishihara.

Phantom Hourglass Dated For Europe (Delay=Not So Bad!)

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 8:30 PM on August 23, 2007

PHbanner.jpgNintendo have announced a release date for Phantom Hourglass in Europe. And it's in 2007! October 19, actually, which is less than a month after the game's US release. Leaves European Zelda fans in a pickle - do you wait 2-3 weeks and grab it locally? Or do you import to shave a week or two off that wait? Unless your English isn't the best. Then I guess you just wait for the local release. For English-speakers, though...decisions decisions.

Cruis'n Is The Worst-Looking Wii Game Ever

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 7:30 PM on August 23, 2007

arghmyeyes.jpgFirst instinct upon seeing the cover art was "no, this is not going to end well". Now we've got some Cruis'n screens...this does not look like it's going to end well. Unless this is some kind of joke (oh haha we can make a 2006 Ubisoft Wii racer too). But it's probably not. Midway, seriously, what the fuck is this? I know that graphics aren't everything, but...they're still something.

"PS3 Benefitting From Gears of War"

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 6:30 PM on August 23, 2007

giantreinface2.jpg Once again, Epic honcho Mark Rein gives a master-class in flamebait. Previously, he was going on about that groovy Blu-ray. And now? Now he's talking about how the PLAYSTATION 3 is benefitting from Xbox 360 exclusive Gears of War. I'll let Rein explain. Sounds better when he says it:

Now, oddly enough, we're a little ahead on PLAYSTATION 3 compared to where we were at this time on Xbox 360, and what I mean by that is our code and our level of completeness, and that's because we have shipped a game with UE3 already. So PLAYSTATION 3 is very much benefiting from Gears of War. That sounds silly, but it's very much benefiting from Gears of War. And the point is that we're more prepared today for PLAYSTATION 3 than we were for Xbox 360 this time last year, and the engine is running a little better — we're X frames ahead with, let's not forget, a lot more polygons and a lot more materials, a lot more characters and a lot more projectiles. When you see UT, this pushes the engine a lot harder than Gears of War did.
So! If you thought Gears of War on the Xbox 360 was hot shit, wait until you see Unreal Tournament 3 on the PS3. Epic's "a little ahead," and the engine's "a little better." But the game? A LOT BETTER. Must be all those extra maps Rein is cramming in there.

In other Mark Rein news, what about claims that Silicon Knight's legal claims that Epic delivered crummy support? Epic delivers fantastic support, buster. Just ask Rein! This after the jump.

Nippon Ichi To Develop For 360

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 6:00 PM on August 23, 2007

disg.jpgYou think Nippon Ichi, you do not think Xbox 360. Disgaea, Phantom Brave, La Pucelle: Tactics...they're not 360 games! Which is probably the whole point behind a deal which will see Nippon Ichi publishing games on the 360. No further word on anything like games or timeframes, but an XBLA version of any of the above names might be a good place to start. That or all-new games. Either way, I'm not fussed, sure there'll be some people in Japan and some people outside Japan happy about this.

Microsoft Retrofitting 360 Wheels: Some Overheat, "Release Smoke"

Problems like...overheating. No shit. Seems a few owners have, while using the power supply (ie not in wireless mode), had their wheels overheat and spew smoke. Microsoft are recommending users hold off from using the power supply until they can get a retrofit, and have contacted all relevant product safety bodies in order to get the word out. Overheating. You gotta be kidding me. Press release follows.

SimCity Turned Into Japanese Erotic Game

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 5:00 PM on August 23, 2007

batsubatsu.jpg What was missing in SimCity? Hot spots for dating and "adult goods." With Batsu Batsu na Kanojo no Tsukurikata, erotic games maker Kiss is picking up where Will Wright left off. The game features traditional dating sim elements plus a "city development system" that is reminiscent of SimCity. What's different is that you're goal isn't to make citizens happy or foster an active economy, but focusing on creating dating spots like restaurants, theme parks and "adult goods" shops to woo ladies at. The official site is scant on info, so we're not quite sure how extensive this SimCity bit is or if it's just a gimmick. Still, the idea that you're building amusement parks, restaurants and adults-only stores to court game heroines is HILARIOUS. Once more screenshots surface, we shall post them. Oh yes, we shall.

Sun Rises, Sony Announce Another Buzz! Game

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 1:40 PM on August 23, 2007

buzzps3.jpgIn a SHOCKING, SURPRISING move, Sony have announced that Buzz!, the quiz game that NOBODY I know owns (and my net in this case is being cast wide, dear readers) and yet manages to sit in the PAL sales charts week in, week out, is getting a PS3 version. Called Buzz! Quiz TV, it takes a similar approach to the PS3's SingStar, in that instead of continually releasing themed versions on disc, it'll connect online and give you access to at first 5000 questions (on the bundled disc, and across all subjects), and later "tens of thousands". Best part, though, is that you can come up with your OWN questions, which should give them game a fair leg-up in the longevity stakes. Oh, another online feature it'll be taking advantage of is team play - you'll be able to form teams and compete against others, in some kind of online pub trivia night but without the cheap schnitzel and the annoying uni kids in the corner blurting out every answer. The game's due in March 2008.

Ten More Tracks Confirmed For Rock Band

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 1:20 PM on August 23, 2007

fallingtopieces.jpgEA and Harmonix aren't done with the Rock Band announcements. It's not enough the game is coming to PS2 and will feature Euro-specific tracks, oh no. They've got to add 10 more tracks to the core setlist as well. Some of these are new, some are merely confirming earlier rumours, and some (Sabotage) are now turning up on both Guitar Hero III and Rock Band. Tarts. The new tracks are:

Rolling Stones, "Gimme Shelter"
Deep Purple, "Highway Star"
The Clash, "Should I Stay or Should I Go"
Faith No More, "Epic"
Smashing Pumpkins, "Cherub Rock"
Radiohead, "Creep"
Beastie Boys, "Sabotage"
Jet, "Are You Gonna Be My Girl"
OK Go, "Here It Goes Again"
Nine Inch Nails, "The Hand That Feeds"

Faith No More? May I say that's a decision that's long overdue.

The Haruhi Dance IN PRISON!!

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 1:00 PM on August 23, 2007

Just when I swear off posting Haruhi dance videos, comes this: Prisoner inmates doing the Haruhi dance. Let me repeat that. Prison inmates doing the Haruhi dance. Here the cons at the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Centre in the Philippines strut their stuff — snipers, spotlights and all! Word has it that this is just practice, so they aren't, you know, quite where they need to be. The warden is apparently taking requests as previously the inmates did Michael Jackon's Thriller. Supposedly, this isn't punishment, either. It's just, well, bizarre!

The 1080p, sixty frames per second remake features some of the best moments from past WipeOuts, layering a lifetime of features on top of well known mechanics, aesthetics and locations.

Two teams were available, Feisar and AG Systems, but a number of other cars from different organisations, all familiar to WipEout vets. Only a pair of tracks were available in the demo, the Chenghou Project from and Anulpha Pass, both from WipEout Pure. Each track could be raced in either Venom class or the more challenging Flash class, with increased speed and extra laps.

ATHF Zombie Ninja Pro-Am Trailer

I can safetly say just by looking at these screens that Aqua Teen Hunger Force Zombie Ninja Pro-Am for the PS2 is going to be the single best hybrid kart racing/fighting/golf game ever created. I have no idea what the hell is going on throughout the majority of this clip, but for some reason it makes me happy. Besides, it has Ninja in the name. NaturalMotion Tackles Football With Backbreaker

Posted by Mike Fahey at 9:00 AM on August 23, 2007

Why would anyone try to take on the next-generation console football genre up against EA's Madden series when even their biggest competitor has fallen? Watch the video. NaturalMotion is the company behind the euphoria Animation System used in GTA IV and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, and they're taking that animation system and applying it to the gridiron.

"Backbreaker is the first football game with truly interactive tackles. By utilising our motion synthesis engine, euphoria, players will never make the same tackle twice, giving them an intensely unique experience every time they play the game," said NaturalMotion CEO Torsten Reil. "Backbreaker puts players in the middle of the gridiron by providing a pure, realistic football experience only possible on next-generation consoles."
If the game ends up anything like that video, NaturalMotion could give EA a run for its money in 2008. Wow. Just wow.

Go!Messenger Brings Chat To PSP

Posted by Mike Fahey at 8:20 AM on August 23, 2007

gomessenger.jpgWhile the PSP might not be everyone's favourite gaming platform, it certainly is becoming a highly versatile little piece of technology. Even more so now that Sony has revealed aat their Games Convention press conference Go!Messenger, a wireless communications package that will bring text, voice, and video chat to the plucky handheld across Europe this January. Being delivered as a free firmware upgrade (along with a small application that needs to be downloaded to your memory stick), Go!Messenger will allow PSP owners to text chat via on screen keyboard right from the get go. Add a microphone and VOIP tech allows you to voice chat. Ad the Go!Cam to the mix and you'll be able to make video calls and record and send dirty fun video messages. The PSP just completely surpassed its price tag in terms of value as far as I am concerned. Let's hope Sony doesn't make us non-Euros wait too long for this nifty feature!

Hack For BioShock Widescreen Issue

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 8:00 AM on August 23, 2007

Bio-1-T.jpg For those who are impatient, Racer_S over at Widescreen Gaming Forum has apparently created a BioShock widescreen hack. Once installing the program, is should correct the sleeve cropping that occurs in the game. This hack, of course, is only for the PC version. Over at WGF, folks in Vista and XP are getting it to work (some are not), so this app should conceivably do the trick. It doesn't work for every version of Vista — like, it doesn't work for Vista 64 bit. What about 360 owners? You're still screwed. Well, for now.

Wii Passes Xbox 360 In Worldwide Sales

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 7:45 AM on August 23, 2007

ng_sales.png It happened. Even with a year headstart, the Xbox 360 has been eclipsed by the Nintendo Wii in sales. According to independent tracker Video Game Chartz, the Wii just passed the 360 this week. Gotta numbers fetish? Here's the breakdown:

Wii: 10.57 Million sold (3.46M Japan, 4.24M America, 2.87M Others)
Xbox 360: 10.51 Million sold (0.43 Japan, 6.75 America, 3.32 Others)
PS3: 4.32 Million sold (1.13M Japan, 1.87 America, 1.32 Others)

Yes, that same info is directly above in handy chart form. So... Japan's a big gaping hole for Microsoft, huh? Always has been!

Total War Sails Towards Empire

Posted by Mike Fahey at 7:30 AM on August 23, 2007

empire822.jpgSega and developer The Creative Assembly are tripping through the time streams together something fierce. Having just yesterday announced Viking: Battle for Asgard, now they set the clocks forward to the 18th century for Empire: Total War, the latest in the popular Total War RTS franchise. Aside from the natural inclusion of gunpowder in the mix, Empire introduces naval combat to the series. Control a vast fleet of ships or a lone wolf on the sea, firing cannons, grappling, and engaging the enemy in shipboard combat. Little wary of such an unknown element being introduced into my favourite RTS series, but with the 18th century so rife with conflict I'm sure there'll be plenty else to do should the seas be too calm.
