BBC Coming To Xbox Live?

Posted by Brian Crecente at 11:52 PM on September 10, 2007

bbclogo.JPGMicrosoft and the BBC are in talks about selling BBC television as downloadable content via the Xbox Live Marketplace when the Video service hits the UK, the Sunday Times reports. Last year the BBC signed an agreement with Microsoft to explore ways of developing its digital services.

"We are working diligently on multiple fronts to make it happen," said Ross Honey, senior director for media at Microsoft's content and partner strategy group. "The BBC is a great content provider."
The story goes on to say that they are also in talks with "several other European media companies," but doesn't name them.

Roach Burgers (Yum, Yum)

RE: Travels... or Trevails

I know whatcha mean about relaxing. Today consisted of going to immigration, taking the kid to the doctor, writing two magazine articles and calling Austria. Nothing like calling Austria. Fine place!

So I got a few more prospective places for our TGS party. Very much looking forward to the meet up.

While I was out today, I took the wife to eat hamburgers. We went to Freshness Burger. Freshness Burger is like MOS Burger, but not as good. Mrs. Bashcraft had never been to Freshness Burger, so we went. We both were famished and sat down to our Classic Burger and Classic Burger with cheese. Not bad. Not as good as MOS Burger, but w/e. So as we're sitting there, gobbling down our burgers and my wife is talking about going to Universal Studios Japan with the kid, I see a large, black cockroach scurry across the floor.

My wife is still going on about USJ as I check my food. No roaches. I glance over hers, which seems fine. I have two options: Tell my wife I saw a cockroach or don't. Telling her would involve her getting freaked out and having to go to another restaurant. And besides! We had already eaten half our food.

The rest of the lunch was spent chewing my food, choking it down and looking at the black, shiny roach inch its way up the wall. Mrs. Bashcraft said her Classic Burger was delicious.

Rock Band Is A Highway Star

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 11:20 PM on September 10, 2007

Nobody's gonna take their car...without replacing it first with a small truck thing and then a tour bus. Nice trailer. Certainly sets the mood for the rocking and rolling that's sure to follow in the game's wake.

Who Do You Think Will Star In Wolfenstein Movie?

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 11:00 PM on September 10, 2007

box-l.jpg Say what you will about the Roger Avary's Silent Hill script, the filmmaker has churned out some great pictures including The Rules of Attraction and Killing Zoe. His next project? Bringing Return to Castle Wolfenstein to the big screen. Avary wants to do the first-person-shooter as a "men on a mission" movie like The Dirty Dozen or Where Eagles Dare. The director explains:

I mean, what's not to love? It's a WWII "guys on a mission" movie, which means you're going to be blowing shit up, storming bunkers, busting dams, derailing trains, and killing Nazi's.

The Xbox Mini

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 10:20 PM on September 10, 2007

xboxmini.jpgThe original Xbox? Loads of good times, but it wasn't exactly pleasing on the eye. Oh, it also took up too much space; you couldn't even put other console/DVD player things on top of it since they curved the roof. Gah! Thankfully, those two shortcomings have been rectified by this case mod, the Xbox Mini, which chucks out the old DVD drive in favour of an 80GB HDD and comes in a oh-that's-much-better, smaller case. It's not quite finished, but it's getting there.

Bungie Illustrator Explains US/Japan Differences

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 10:00 PM on September 10, 2007

bush_koizumi_japan.jpg Illustrator Ken Taya is a second generation Japanese-American. Currently, he's working at Bungie as an environmental artist. He cut his teeth at Nintendo Software Technology in Redmond, translating and working as a 3D artist. So what's the difference in working for a US and a Japanese company?

I do feel that attitude of management differs greatly between the two cultures, however. When working under Japanese management, I was much more spoon fed and there seemed to be a lot of hand holding. Under American supervision I was given much more freedom to make my own mistakes and learn from them...
Not sure which is better or worse, but the fact that both exist is fascinating.

David Braben Not A Fan Of Manhunt 2, UK Ratings

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 9:30 PM on September 10, 2007

giantbraben.jpgI'm a David Braben fan. Guy makes Elite, he gets me on his side for life. David Braben, though, is not a fan of the UK's BBFC ratings system. Not a Manhunt 2 fan, either, now you mention it.

...from what I've heard of Manhunt 2 (I haven't had the chance to play it), it is not the sort of game the industry should be making, as it is inevitably going to attract controversy.

Kotobukiya 's Red & Blue Master Chief Figures

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 8:30 PM on September 10, 2007

blueheader.jpgToy/Halo 3 fans will remember the badass Kotobukiya Master Chief statue from a few months back. Well they just sent word that there are two more Master Chiefs on the way, both variants on the existing mould but sporting new colour schemes. One red, one blue. The blue version, money can't buy, it's one of the prizes in a Mountain Dew competition. But the red one, it's a Gamestation exclusive for the UK market and will be available in October.

MapleStory Anime Characters Look Fugly

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 8:00 PM on September 10, 2007

maplestory-anime-characters.jpg Yup, these are the MapleStory anime designs. No, really. They look like anything BUT the cute characters that populate the Korean MMORPG. Not as though we were counting the days down until it airs this October on TV Tokyo, but this cartoon must be a cruel joke! Who is creating this garbage! Seriously!!

Harmonix Forgets Soundgarden Were Awesome

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 7:30 PM on September 10, 2007

jesus.jpgAs far as how well songs are suited towards Rock Band, Soundgarden's Black Hole Sun is BORING. The Chili Pepper's Dani California is even worse. Yet for some reason we have people claiming that the Rock Band tour currently doing the rounds shows these two tracks have made it into the game. Not really a Chili Peppers fan, but I at least know their older works are rock-heavy (at least for the purposes of this game). I am a Soundgarden fan, and know that this is the band that brought us Jesus Christ Pose.

Korea Gives Masterclass In PSP Slim Advertising

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 7:00 PM on September 10, 2007

kbutterfly.jpg Classy! Here is a print ad for the new slim and lite PSP that does a nice job of emphasising it's lighter. This ad is way easier to grasp than Japan's towel twisting. What's more, it's also cheaper in Korea! The portable is marked down to 178,000 (approx. US $190). It really is lighter.

Why Are You All Ignoring Blue Dragon?

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 6:30 PM on September 10, 2007

BDlogo.jpgOh, didn't you know? Blue Dragon is out. In the West. In English and everything. And it's being totally ignored. Which having played it non-stop for the past week makes me a little sad. Sure, it does absolutely nothing new, but the old stuff it does, it does with a degree of polish you rarely see outside of a first-party Nintendo title. I love it. Might even be, at time of writing, one of the platform's strongest titles, and it definitely plugs a big hole in the 360's lineup. In fact the game's biggest problem is not its own, it's Microsofts decision to ship it in the second half of 2007. The cupboard was bare earlier this year: had this been released then I'd have played it for months. Now? I don't think I'll get past disc 2 before the downpour starts, and I'll end up retiring it to the cupboard until next year. Which is a damn shame.

SNK's Unfulfilled Home Hardware Plans

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 5:00 PM on September 10, 2007

snkosakasoffice.JPG Back before SNK was bought by a pachinko company (SNK is now once again independent), the company announced it was working on new hardware. What kind of hardware? Most assumed that meant a new Neo Geo portable. A former employee tells Insert Credit's Brandon Sheffield that SNK that wasn't quite true. Apparently, SNK sunk a chunk of cash into a new chip that was going to be used for next-gen arcade hardware and a new home console. SNK's cash flow got tight, and the new chip started to look "a bit silly" when compared to other consoles that were on the market between 1999~2000. The chip was small enough to fit in a portable device, and that could've been another option. So, how did it look? "Much better than Neo Geo 64," the insider tells Sheffield. Good to know!

New Japanese Book Asks Why PS3 "Failed"

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 4:00 PM on September 10, 2007

31946642.jpg The PS2 was the undisputed last gen winner. Going into the current generation, Sony had a huge leg-up momentum and brand-wise. Many pegged the PS3 as once again the winner, but the PS3 has so far failed to live up to expectations. Japanese game journalist Kiyoshi Tane lays out why the PLAYSTATION 3 has been a bust in his new 207-page-book Why Did The PS3 Fail?. Tane, an editor at culture mag Continue, originally stated that the PS3 would be a success. Sensational titles aside, Tane apparently does a neutral job of examining the strife and costs that have resulted in mediocre sales and online black-lash. Not even a year in, it is a little to early to call the PS3 a failure. Fret not! Though, books being published calling it one isn't a good sign. Neither are Why Did The PS3 Fail? currently listing at #15 on the Amazon Japan sales ranking and the book boasting positive reader reviews. The PS3 still has a lot to prove before being called a success — and not just in Japan, too.

Wii Zapper To Include Zelda Game?

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 3:40 PM on September 10, 2007

linkbow.jpgThere's a GameStop manager's meeting going down in Vegas at the moment. According to Opposable Thumbs, the assembled throng have been treated to the first footage of a game being bundled with the Wii Zapper. Their sources are saying it's a Zelda game. Zelda Crossbow Training. Which plays in the third-person and is running on what looked to them to be the Twilight Princess engine. Thoroughly promising, but also totally unconfirmed at this stage, so keep your knickers untwisted and your horses held.

Alright, Whose Grandparent's Game?

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 2:00 PM on September 10, 2007

grandpa-video-game-interactivevoices-blog-775741.jpg Hey! Today is National Grandparents Day. So, hopefully you called your parents' parents or wrote them an email or sent them a card or screamed loudly in their general direction. Because remember, if they didn't have sex and make your mum-and-dad, you wouldn't be here. And if you weren't here, you couldn't play video games. Think about it!

With the Wii and the DS, the buzz words have been "expanding the audience" — AKA, getting old folks to play Wii Sports and Brain Age. And some elders, like Old Grandma Hardcore, are really, really into games. What about yours? Got any gaming grannies or gramps? Are you one yourself?! Hit the comments and tell all.

Subject: Moving Out

So, I've been reporting all weekend from New York City which is now my temporary residence until I move to San Francisco in December. I packed up all my stuff and it's now in storage in Atlanta awaiting my return to pick it up and move it across the country. I can't really say I'm going to miss Atlanta much except for some friends and it feels good to be in a new environment even for a short amount of time. I leave for Tokyo a week from today and I'm sure I'll get really excited about it one I've gotten a chance to settle in here, but it will be an awesome trip and It will be cool to see you in person again.

Some things you may have missed this weekend:
The Master Chief figure made his debut at Madame Tussauds in Las Vegas
This list of the top 25 best selling games was surprising
Silent Hill 5 looks awesome

I'm off to relax and check out some Heavenly Sword and try to adjust living out of suitcases for the next three months. Have a great week!

Week In Games: Heavenly Sword Edition

Posted by Flynn De Marco at 10:00 AM on September 10, 2007

This week has a nice choice of titles spread out over various systems (sans the PSP). I'm trying to get to Heavenly Sword tonight so I can see for myself what it's going to be like and I am anxious to check out Jam Sessions and Drawn to Life for the DS. I've avoided Oblivion for a while just because I'm afraid of getting sucked in, but the inclusion of all the expansions on one disc is intriguing. What to do, what to do?

Heavenly Sword (PS3)

Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops Plus Japanese Trailer

Posted by Flynn De Marco at 9:00 AM on September 10, 2007

Here's a look at the upcoming Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops Plus for the PSP. Of course, it's all in Japanese, but you still get to see a lot of gameplay footage. This one is pretty long for a trailer too, clocking in at over six minutes. It's nice to see Snake looking so young and spry, I've gotten so used to seeing him with grey hair lately it's easy to forget he was young once too.

The GTA San Andreas Cake

Posted by Flynn De Marco at 7:00 AM on September 10, 2007

gtacake.jpgThis is definitely the coolest (and I think only) GTA cake I have ever seen. I'm particularly fond of the copious use of knick-knacks on the cake like the tiny cars and the fake money. I'm a sucker for an overly decorated cake that uses lots of little toys. The only thing that's missing is some tiny hookers and some blood. It's a well done cake, but despite the subject matter it is a bit on par with something you might see coming out of the local grocery store with the pre-rendered photographic icing. Although, the use of this cake for a four year old's birthday seems highly questionable. Oh, and that sound you hear is the head of certain Florida lawyer exploding.

Happy Birthday, Dreamcast!

Posted by Flynn De Marco at 4:00 AM on September 10, 2007

dreamcast.jpgToday marks the eighth birthday of one of the most underrated and unappreciated consoles ever to hit the market, The Sega Dreamcast. The little system gave birth to some really great games including Crazy Taxi, Soul Calibur, Rez, Wetrix, PowerStone, and many others. Although it didn't do too well commercially and eventually left the market when some heavy competition appeared on the scene, The Dreamcast nevertheless garnered a rabid cult -like following. Despite it's failure on the commercial front, the system still lives on thanks to the tireless efforts of homebrew creators and fans, giving extended life to an otherwise dead system. So, Happy Birthday Dreamcast, we hardly knew ye.

Master Chief Wax Figure Exposed

Posted by Flynn De Marco at 3:00 AM on September 10, 2007

masterpete.jpgWhen I posted the story about the unveiling of the Master Chief wax figure at Madame Tussauds in Las Vegas yesterday, we had yet to get our hands on any actual photos of the big guy all completed. Well, you asked for it, you got it. Here he is in all his waxy glory accompanied by unveiler, Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy. If you ask me, Pete seems a little too happy to be handling Master Chief's big ole' gun although I have to say it's a toss up on which one of them looks more fake. I'm going with Wentz.

1Up's Silent Hill 5 First Look

Posted by Flynn De Marco at 2:00 AM on September 10, 2007

The folks at 1Up get a first look at Silent Hill 5 and man does it look great. From what I can see in the clips of the game shown throughout this piece, it's everything you are going to want from Silent Hill on a next gen platform. The scenes of Silent Hill changing to evil Silent Hill are delivered as promised, in real time while you are actually playing the game and draws directly from the method used in the Silent Hill movie. While it may have had it's faults, the film version did have a lot of interesting ways of treating the environment which translates quite nicely into the video game format. It's also nice to see that they are going back to the elements that made SH 2 the best in the series and steering away from the sometimes clunky mechanics of SH 4. If you are a Silent Hill fan, you're going to love this clip. What are you waiting for? Press play!

COD 4 Beta Download Issues

Posted by Flynn De Marco at 1:00 AM on September 10, 2007

cod4box.jpgDespite the fact the Call of Duty 4 beta keys seem to be flowing like water, many people are reporting problems including downloading the beta itself. I have received many emails on the subject and the thread on the charlieoscardelta website is quite long with twenty one pages. It seems that in many cases the download doesn't happen at all and in some cases the download completes, but can't be played despite multiple tries at downloading. Other players report that once they get the game downloaded and start playing, they are consistently ejected from matches or their 360 freezes before they are taken to the match screen. Now of course we all know this is a beta and some problems are expected, but if you can't download the game, you can't play it and if you can't play it you can't give feedback. Currently, Infinity Ward has not responded to the issues, but gamers are starting to get angry and I can't say I blame them. Has anyone else been having these issues, and if so were you able to resolve them?

...I thought to myself: Wow. I can't believe I just did something that hundreds of thousands of people have been waiting years to do. I can't believe I just did something that I'VE been waiting years to do. It was one of those epiphany moments when I got really, really happy and realised how much I loved my job.
