Too Bloody Hot

To: Simon
From: Luke

Hey Simon! Welcome to Kotaku Towers, and good luck on being our third, and final, guest editor. Between Keighley and Bogost that seat should be pretty warm by now. Toasty, even. If you need anything, air hockey table's on level 6, while you can find the boutique brewery on level 9, past Crecente's private barbershop.

Speaking of warm, it's hot here today. Too hot. While Australia's got a reputation as a hardy, rugged place, I am not a hardy, rugged man, and with my air conditioner broken I've wilted like a delicate flower. Which makes concentrating, let alone typing, difficult. So I'll stop doing both and have a good lie down.

Here's what you missed while Fahey was seeing to your bags:

Jam Sessions causes youth delinquency.

Optimus Prime visits an old friend in the 12th century.

Korean kids learn too much online is bad, but not as bad as refusing to tell their parents they really love them.

1000 Achievement Points In Twenty Seconds

Above, you'll see how difficult and time-consuming it is to rack up 1000 achievement points in Avatar: The Last Airbender: The Burning Earth. To earn them all requires hours of combat, days of trial and error, weeks of exploration. So don't even think of renting this for just one night, score-whores.

Today is Ban Monday

banhammerpicnovember19.jpg For those of you ready to clean house, have we got a day for you! Today is our favourite Kotakuday, Ban Monday. Our willingness to ban increases ten-fold as we clean up and clean out. We want to keep the comments section readable (AKA thin the herd), and we want you to help. Here's how it works: Send tipsATkotaku.com commenter pages for anyone you think should get the boot. Our ban threshold is going to be way lower (hello fanboy trolls!). Nothing is definite, but ban requests from longtime commenters will be given great authority with the hammer. So be sure to include your own commenting profile! Ban Monday ends in exactly 24 hours. Tuesday's comment section will be lighter, faster, better. Onwards!

Ghostbusters Screens

Winston.jpgYou're almost at the breaking point when it comes to this new Ghostbusters game. Almost. Too many fluffy words in quick succession, not enough solid info, we know, we can tell. These screens should about do you, then. Least until we get either more news on what the game's actually like, or shots of just how old Bill Murray's going to look.

PS3 Dev Kits Going For A Song

ps3devkit.jpgInterested, and able, in getting hold of a PS3 dev kit? Oh boy, is this your lucky day. Sony have just announced that the cost of such a unit has been cut by nearly 50% across all three territories, with Japanese kits now at ¥950,000, American at $US 10,250 and European consoles for €7500. Course saving a few thousand bucks means little/nothing to a big studio, but to the wee ones, that's a ton more cash to spend on essentials like whiteboard markers, nodoze and crummy pizzas.

Free Halo 3 Deal Turns Sour

chiefghost.jpgMan, how good did that "free Halo 3" deal sound? I'll tell you. Too good to be true. If you check the source on the original post from Friday, you'll see the Bungie link broken. And we used the Bungie link because the Xbox.com one was broken. Figured it was just for maintenance or some glitch, but no, it was because they've gone ahead and changed the details of the offer. Or, more likely, they forgot to include perhaps the most necessary details when they first published them. Either or. End result's the same: the deal does not mean everyone gets a free copy of Halo 3 when you buy a 360. It means the four people still soldiering on with an old Xbox and an Xbox Live subscription on their old Xbox will get a free copy of Halo 3 when they upgrade to a 360. Just them. And only between November 21 and December 21. How very disappointing.

How Versatile Is Mass Effect's Character Creation?

Let's have a look! While killing time waiting for the ridiculous reviews embargo on Mass Effect to be lifted, Games Radar decided to put the game's character creation utility to the test. Put it through the motions, see how much of a Benetton commercial they could come up with. The results? Except for where they get all silly, many of the characters look pretty good. Sexy ladies, handle-bar moustaches, plastic surgery nightmares, what looks like a chubby John Waters...definitely an improvement on most of the competition's plastic-eyed action figures.

guitargirl.jpgFor when official Rock Band figures just aren't enough! Kotakuite Peter throws together custom resin kits. He's also an impending Rock Band fan. You know where this is going. He's decided to combine the two loves and craft this naughty Rock Band kit, complete with official controller, to a scale that's got us thinking that's one saucy midget.

Fallout 3 Gets 12 Endings

falloutdude.jpgOne ending? Boring. Two? Thanks, but it's just not gonna cut it. Not with Fallout 3 boasting of not just two endings, but two, two, two and then some. Bethesda's Pete Hines has told CVG that depending on what you do during the game and how you do it, you can expect between 9-12 different endings to the game. That's a lot. Hopefully this move has been made with more than just replayability in mind. Because playing an RPG 9-12 times? Not. Fun.

Boot Camps Trying To Cure Korea's Online Obsession

bootcamp.jpgWay I see it, there's two ways to curb Korea's rampant obsession with online gaming. One is to ban all players, destroy all computers and shoot those who don't tow the line. Which would be effective, but also a little drastic. Onto plan B, then: boot camp. The NY Times has an interesting article on the "Jump Up Internet Rescue School", a military-styled camp where kids addicted to online gaming can be sent to get acquainted with friendship, routine, the outdoors and hard (physical) work. Computers are banned, online contact is banned and phone contact's restricted to one hour per day. Does it work? Maybe! One participant/inmate, Lee Chang-hoon, says:

I'm not thinking about games now, so maybe this will help. From now on, maybe I'll just spend five hours a day online.
Only five hours? Success!

Optimus Prime Lights Altair's Darkest Hour

acprime.jpg So there you are, playing through Assassin's Creed, which - faux sci-fi trappings or not - is set in the 12th century. Long time ago. Lot earlier than the invention of transforming children's toys. Or trucks. Which is why it's a little confusing to clamber up and see this intricately-carved wooden window/doorway thing. A little confusing, and a whole lot of awesome.

Jam Sessions Hates Fucking Spongecake (NSFW)

These are, believe it or not, the New Zealand commercials for Ubisoft's cosy little DS music title Jam Sessions. Both are truly magnificent. Neither, however, are suitable for work. The one above features profanity, while the second commercial - after the jump - features a kind of tongue and hand action that's generally frowned upon.

eGames 2007: Halo 3 Big Giant Head

halo3_bgh.jpgWhat's huge, scary and green?

Yes, there's the Hulk, but the inflatable Master Chief helmet that was at eGames fits the bill nicely as well. It pretty much was Microsoft's stand at the event, and despite my prayers for it to be filled with Spartan armour-wearing supermodels, it was sadly empty.

Rambo Poster Looks Like Dark Sector Box Art

rambo_ds.jpgAs you can see above, it's obvious that they share similarities - the white/black duotone; the menacing stance; the even more menacing bladed weapon... you get the picture. Heck, you can see it.

Ignoring the fact that I had to flip the Dark Sector art for symmetry, if someone told me the same art director had been behind both pieces, I'd probably believe them.

What do you reckon?

Weekend Note: Home for the Holiday

To: Ash & Luke
From: Flynn
Subject: Gaming With The Folks

Hello, gents. I am reporting once again from NYC and by the time you read this I will be on a bus on my way to the home of my ancestors (read parents) in Baltimore, MD. Good times! Believe it or not, I've packed my PS3 solely for the purpose of finishing Uncharted: Drake's Fortune which I'm really addicted to at the moment. Fortunately, my parents have the Wii I gave them earlier this year so I packed up Super Mario Galaxy as well. Should provide plenty of gaming fun over the next week of Thanksgiving madness. And if that wasn't enough gaming (and it clearly isn't) I'm hooking up with a couple of the Destructoid guys for a full day of Rock Band. It's going to be a helluva holiday I tells ya.

Some things you might have missed this weekend:

King of Kong is coming to DVD

Super Mario Galaxy kicks Ocarina of Time's ass

Toys R Us is having a killer sale on Wii games

Hope you guys have a great week and I will see you next weekend as I report from the exciting confines of Baltimore. After that I probably won't see you for a few weeks as I make my long awaited move to San Francisco. Goodnight!

Plantronics Competition Winners

Audio770.jpgMorning, sports fans.

Actually, going by last week's competition to give away two sets of Plantronics' .Audio 770s, we're all headphone fans. Nothing wrong with that, I say.

To win, all you had to do was post a cool comment on any story. Considering the high levels of creativity out there, we had a great response. Which made it hard to pick just two winners.

Yet, we came to a decision. Two decisions - both of which you can read after the jump.

Student Made Stop Action Mario Kart Parody

This little clip was put together by some students for the final project of their Spring 2007 Animation class. For a student made film, it's got some pretty great moments in it, my favourite being the mushroom eating. Also, the guy in the bowler hat's sideburns are killer. Having some massive 'burns of my own, I totally respect the chops.

Crecente Plays Football

teamkotaku.jpgNaturalMotion is currently working on a new next-gen football game called Backbreaker for next year. One of the features of the game will be the ability to assign your own colors, logos and names to your team's players. So, to show off the feature, the folks at NM threw together a little Kotaku team featuring our signature pink and green colours and our own Crecente as Quarterback. I don't know what's funnier, the pink uniforms or the thought of anyone on the Kotaku team (with the possible exception of Fahey and Luke) playing football.

Dark Sector Runs Proprietary Engine

ds_1.jpgOne of our tipsters sent us a link to GamingSA's story on Digital Extremes' Dark Sector, which was being demoed at eGames. I'll be posting my own impressions this week, but I just wanted to address an error in the story.

Dark Sector, being developed by Digital Extremes, was one of the first ... next-generation titles to use the Unreal Engine 3 many years ago, and the first next to Unreal Tournament 3 to make use of the UE3 on PlayStation 3.
Sorry, no. Dark Sector runs on a proprietary engine. That's straight from DE's Meridith Braun, who I had the pleasure of speaking to at length when she showed off a video of the game during a promo event for Pariah. Peter Silver from D3Publisher also confirmed this fact again yesterday.

I can understand how you might confuse it with Unreal Engine 3, especially when you consider DE's close ties with Epic, but it's definitely the company's own hard work. I suppose DE could take GamingSA's comment as a compliment.

What NOT To Say to Girls on Xbox Live (Or Anywhere Else)

bs_angel_as_Cortana_by_Artistpavel.jpg There's a great piece up on Hawty McBloggy listing the top ten things said to female gamers on Xbox Live. The post may be a few months old, but its message still has resonance. I know a lot of girl gamers and upon reading over this list, saw many of the things they say they hear on a regular basis. "Are you playing on your brother's/boyfriend's account?", "Dude. Dude! Are you a girl? Will you be my friend? Dude, accept my friend request! Let's hook up!" and "Shouldn't you be playing Barbie Horse Adventures?" are just a few of the ever so clever quips these online idiots think are their best material. Writer BS Angel sums it up best:

Wrap-o-matic: Over The Weekend

Melbourne was great. It's a city you can't help but like.

With eGames and Game Connect pounding along like a pair of horny gorillas, there was plenty to keep me, uh, occupied. Got a little rainy on the Sunday, but I managed to duck between the water drops and do busywork.

I'll be posting content from the events over the next few weeks, so watch this space.

Playstation Universe PS3 Themes
Sure, the background changes colour every month, but it's about time you added a bit of "crap-your-pants" scariness to your PS3.

Zelda II Commercial
Makes you glad visuals have improved to the stage where we don't have to put up with this silly stuff.

Infinity Ward Planning COD4 360 Update
What? You thought Infinity Ward was going to abandon the game? Of course not. Well, not on the 360 at least.

Kotaku Originals: From Mario Galaxy to Super Computers
You call this a wrap-up? Then you really need to see Kotaku Originals. You really do.

Namco's Fragile Site Launches

fragilenamco.jpg A website has launched for a new Wii RPG from Namco entitled Fragile. There is not much information available on it at the moment, but the site lists three dates: Nov. 22, 24 and 26. The 26th seems to be the date that the full site will open and hopefully give us more details on the title. As far as the other two dates are concerned, I'm not entirely sure, but I'm sure one of you out there will be able to translate for us in the comments.

NiGHTS Journey of Dreams Transformation Trailer

Here we finally get treated to a nice lengthy NiGHTS trailer. This game from Sega is causing quite a stir and the lines to play it at TGS were phenomenally long. At least this trailer has some better music than the last one we saw. I know, I know it was the original music and everyone got in a tizzy because I said it was terrible. Well sorry, but nostalgic or not it was still terrible. One man's opinion.

KB Toys Black Friday Deal

kbad.jpg A little less than a week to go and the Black Friday deals are rolling in. This one from KB Toys. According to their circular, they are offering Buy One Get One Free on their entire stock of video games. The offer excludes hardware and bundles with a limit of four fee games per customer. I find it a bit odd that there are no next-gen games in the photo, but the ad clearly states "entire stock." If there is a KB in your area, you might want to give a call or stop by this week to see what the selection is like before you head over there at 6am only to find yourself faced with some crappy GBA games.
