Child Beaten to Death by Drunk Teen, Sister Acting Out Game
Posted by Brian Crecente at 1:12 AM on December 21, 2007

A 7-year-old's sister and her boyfriend were charged Tuesday with child abuse resulting in death after the two beat and kicked the Colorado girl to death as they were acting out fights from Mortal Kombat, according to arrest affidavits.
Heather Trujillo, 16, and her boyfriend, Lamar Roberts, 17, of Westminster, are being held on $US 100,000 bond.
Zoe died on Dec. 6 from blunt force trauma to her brain and central nervous system. According to the Weld County Coroner her right wrist was broken, her body had more than 20 bruises, her neck muscles were bleeding and skin near her tongue had been torn.
According to the arrest affidavits, Trujillo told investigators she and Roberts were babysitting Zoe (Garcia) and her twin, 3-year-old sisters, while their mother worked at the Corral Bar about five blocks away.Trujillo said they were acting out the video game "Mortal Combat" by savagely hitting and kicking Zoe, even dropping her on her side, which broke her wrist. Roberts, who claimed to be a martial-arts expert with his hands registered as "lethal weapons, said Zoe had asked him to stop hitting her but that he didn't because "...I was drunk."
Roberts said he had performed a back kick on her, then kicked her again as she ran toward him. She fell back and didn't get up. She had stopped breathing, and Trujillo and Roberts waited 15 minutes before calling for help.
They said they put her in a bath, which temporarily revived her, but that she stopped breathing again. Roberts said he cracked an egg in her mouth "to see if she was messing around with them."
The egg went down her throat, the affidavit stated.
Finally, the mother and paramedics were called. Zoe was taken to the Northern Colorado Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.
A witness told investigators that she asked Roberts whether Zoe had asked them to stop. "Yeah, she told me to stop," he said. Asked why he didn't stop, he said, "I don't know; I was drunk."
I can't even begin to express both my sincere sorrow for the loss this family must be going through now and my disgust at these teens who decided to get drunk and beat a child to death.

This is very weak i mean...
Why the hell will some one bash a girl to death before chrismas!
Not in deffence of neither but the girl should of fourt back!
Like i think Unless if your in mortal danger Kill another you might die aswell!
But in deffence of the girl:
She could of been pinned then killed but the people were much bigger thats another disadventage!
They was drunk: But who would care its your choice to get drunk mainly not ours!
I mean if a dog shits on your lawn everyday, you get devorced, Your framed for shoplifting,
You are pushed into a pool of slime on your birthday and your closest freind dies (not of murder) you dont kill a boy, girl, man and lady
IT
IS
JUST
REVOlTING
I wish there was no such thing as death because we would not have all these stupid bloody problems all the time.
If i was the president of the world i would make sure its death penalty for things like this (despite in self deffence)
This whole things just like a million mile tall middle finger to the media, public and gouvement its just the most vile thing i heard just like 911 on one person!
When i read the damage they caused to the girls body I HATE IT i NEVER WANT TO HEAR OF IT AGAIN ITS SO CRUEL AND ITS SO MUCH GORE.
I MEAN I TOO PLAY VERY GRITY GAMES LIKE
scarface the world is yours, GTA San audreas, ETC!
But this i mean the dallas boogey man killed alot of people but this zoe girl 7 year old girl did not live to the fullest!
I dont know when this happen but to the parents...

A truly appalling, tragic thing.
However all you geniuses calling for the death penalty need to wake up. For a start, the problem with a society allowing the death penalty is that the justice system doesn't always get it right. Do you really trust your legal and judicial processes not to ever get the wrong person for a crime?
Secondly, the two idiots responsible for this abhorrent act are not adults - they are both under 18 so they certainly won't be getting the death penalty.

Mortal Kombat? What year is this? This is another lame case of people saying that they're imitating art, but how many times would you kick a kid before you think "Uh oh, this kid is in serious trouble."
Maybe we should blame the underage drinking rather than the mortal kombat. Some people just should not be drinking, especially when it leads them to violence like this.

First I think this is one of those things that should never happen and I can't begin to say how sorry I am for simply being a part of the same race as those two.
Second, it says in the report "Roberts, who claimed to be a martial-arts expert with his hands registered as lethal weapons" Doesn't that say that he might have been thinking of something other than Mortal Kombat techniques when he killed those kids?

Idiots...
Now to the point: Mortal Kombat? Really? Did you just say that because everybody knows it or are you actually still playing that? Drinking and videogames are a good scapegoat for someone who's underage might actually give them a shorter sentence. Here in holland people always say they can't remember or didnt know what they were doing, works too!

Indeed, a terrible tragedy. I can only imagine what the little girl was thinking the whole time. She'll never be able to grow up and enjoy life *Lord knows she probably wanted a Wii*.
The 2 idiot teenagers can only blame themselves for abusing, well, everything *alcohol, video games ,martial arts* and deserve life sentences.
And seriously, cracking open a raw egg in her mouth? To see if she was messing around? Couldnt you get the same effect by shaking her a bit? Or, I dont know, checking to see if that's actual blood coming out of her mouth!? Sickening, they have no common sense or human decency whatsoever.

So he was acting out Mortal Kombat but what effing game lets you crack an egg in somebodys mouth? The sad thing is the lil girl might have survived if they had called for help seeing as how she was temporarily revived. I think Cracking the egg in her mouth suffocated her and possibly went down the wind pipe.
Right before Xmas and this happens. Also if they were drunk where did they get the alcohol, seeing as how the mother works in a bar I wouldnt be surprised if her liquor stash wasnt safe guarded.

The most depressing part of this has been watching the morning news cover it - the entirety of the coverage is fatalities from Mortal Kombat.
This isn't even an issue of them making a single poor decision in acting out an obviously fantastic act from a videogame. This was the systematic beating of a young child to death, while intoxicated, for no reason other than the fact that she was there to be beaten. If it wasn't Mortal Kombat, it would have been a Jackie Chan movie. If it wasn't that, it would have been Walker: Texas Ranger. If it wasn't that, it would have been some other "inspiration".
If you are so removed from reality that a cybernetic ninja hitting a lightning deity with a spear inspires you to act out literal violence on a living person, you have issues far above those a videogame might inspire.
These two are killers, plain and simple. There is no passing the buck onto virtual violence when you take another person's life.

Our society sucks. We don't place enough importance on the parental role in child rearing. We shout and point fingers at the so called 'corruptions' when we should be instilling the importance of a strong moral and ethical core.
A friend of mine took his 7 year old to Spiderman 3. What the fuck was he thinking. I can't find fault with most of his decisions but he obviously left his brain in bed that morning. He said that his son really wanted to see it.
No shit. At 13 I really wanted to see those cool looking R movies I heard about from my older sister. If I was watching those movies it was under severe stealth and scheming from my parents.
Kids are impressionable, hell some adults are. We as parents really need to take a hold of this situation. Its every generations responsibility to make the next a better kinder one.

God that's terrible :(.
Honestly, I think I believe the dumbass kids tho. Tons of people (especially kids) act out games/movies/whatever so as to have something to do. When we were like 11 or 12 or so, my siblings and I used to have playfights where we mimicked fighting game type stuff, mortal kombat being the main one.
Combine that with the fact that a lot of kids these days seem way too desensitized to fights (school, the hood, etc), and I can actually kinda see where this fucked up drunk-ass kid might've thought it wouldn't hurt her so badly.
I'm not opposed to the death penalty, but I think that's too much here. Presumably it was an accident, so I'm thinking half or maybe a quarter life sentence would be enough to make sure they never do anything like this again.

This kind of thing shouldn't even be tolerated in a modern world! It not only grossly disgusts me but it also is an perfect example for politicians to strike down on the gaming industry due to two completely insane individuals who committed a horrible act. Acting out MK on a child? Are you kidding me? Yeah, of course there was alcohol involved, someone would have to be drunk to beat up a 7 year old girl! But still, this is sick, on the border of insane. There was much more than just alcohol involved I suspect, maybe just plain stupidity, and complete recklessness. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family, minus the daughter who was responsible.

Mortal Kombat?!, "I was drunk", and a 16 year old alone and unsupervised with the 17 year old boyfriend? Seriously?!?!
For starter:
You've got to ask yourself where the parents are in this situation. You hear strange noises coming from your 16 year old daughters room and as a father you go in there with a shotgun and a shovel. Especially if the 17 year old boyfriend is over.
This sounds to me like tha kids were boning, the younger sister comes to see whats going on and the two flip out about getting caught and beat the crap out of her. Watching to much CSI makes me wonder if they are going to check for sexual trauma.
Its things like this that scare the hell out of me as a parent. For as much wisdom and guidance as you can instill in your kids there are fifty other kids with no values and poor moral fiber almost aching to ruin your kids life pulling some dumb stunt. Private schooling + being an open/honest parent = non-F'd up kids.

I witness violence on a daily basis at one point. i could have gone down the path of selflessness, but I had the luxury of having a mother to be mother/father figure to me. i pray that the youth coming up will have the same luxury.

This story is absolutely disgusting. These two idiots are truly animals. I don't know how many of you have a 3 year old in your family, but this is a very small child that this person was severly beating on.
God bless the rest of the family and especially the poor little girl who passed, these two have ruined all of their lives. Hopefully the punishment is severe and the criminal justice system refuses to allow the buck to be passed on to some other remote blame. At 17....you are a man. A cowardly animal, but you knew your actions and their consequences. He should serve consecutive life sentences. No chance of parole.

To even think he has the gall to try and blame this on something other than their own lack of compassion or not having even a shred of humanity. They try to blame it on being drunk and re-enacting video games. More likely, the sadistic son of a bitch got bored and decided that beating the ever living shit out of his sister was the appropriate course of action. And then, provided that their story is true, which I doubt, trying to find out if she is still breathing by cracking an egg down her throat? Seriously? They should be beaten to a bloody pulp just for being that freaking stupid. Honestly. Lets break this one down...
You're sister who is half your age has been kicked in the head and stopped breathing. Do you:
A. Call an Ambulance
B. Call 911
C. Begin CPR
D. Crack a raw egg down her throat
(P.S. The answer is NOT D)
Motherfucker still chose D.

So other than the fact they beat the shit out of this little girl (and then poured an egg down her throat... how fucking STUPID do you have to be), how exactly were they acting out "Mortal Kombat?" Sounds like after they realized they'd killed her, or after deliberately killing her, they came up with some half-brained "video games made me do it" excuse.
I say give them the death penalty. Either they did this in cold blood and deserve it... or they're so dangerously stupid that it would be safer for the community to get rid of them.

I feel terrible for the mother and rest of the family.
We all know how this is going to play out in the media, as effects of violents video games. We (as in the learned Kotaku readers) know of course that violence in society is multifactorial. From these early reports, it sounds like drunk teenagers wiht absentee parents are more to blame. It's too bad for people that enjoy gaming, that the dimwitted people (JT included) who do things like this have realized that it's an easy scapegoat.

Graywind
Posted 9:00 AM 20/12/07
I love how people love to put the blame on everyone BUT the kids. My belief is simply this: We are all individuals with the ability to differentiate between right and wrong. Those two individuals knew they were in the wrong but didn't care. How do I know this? "...they put her in the bath, which temporarily revived her..." THAT one instance showed that they knew they had hurt her to some degree that they had to revive her.
But that didn't stop them. Why? Because of a simple plain truth. Most criminals (and these two are plainly criminals) have high self-esteem and are ego-centric. Meaning, they believe that they can't suffer repercussions from their actions. That, because of who they are, they are immune to the norms that everyone else is accountable to. This is clearly the case here. "Roberts, who claimed to be a martial-arts expert with his hands registered as 'lethal weapons'..." What a load of egocentric BS.
There is a reason 17 year olds can be tried as adults. As time progresses children are maturing, mentally, faster than we did when we were their ages. The fact that "adults" try to ascribe to those young adults their maturity level at that age is a sign of egotism on behalf of the "adults". Not everyone is or was like you. I mean, would YOU enact this terrible murder upon a small child?
The sheer brutality and sociopathic glee in which this murder was committed cries out for these two to be tried as adults. It also calls for the death penalty to be considered by a jury in a court of law.
Let's put the blame solely where the blame truly resides and nowhere else...with the two young adults mentioned in this article.

I second whoever wrote "FATALITY", because it does come to mind.
And I actually felt bothered by the press release calling it "Mortal Combat", it's written with K for a reason. K's make everything more brutal and raw.
And as for the teenagers, they're obviously a lost cause, if they wouldn't have killed the girl, which is a tragedy, they would've eventually done something else equally detestable.
Shame video games take the blame again, but if they didn't, this probably wouldn't even have made the news in the first place.

Isn't it strange nowadays that they actually reveal the names and identities of minors that commit crimes. Before, they always kept the identities of minors hidden. But I guess since these kids are now being tried as adults, they can reveal their names. Still, it's pretty sickening to hear a couple teens would do something like that.
If people blame video games for this, then they are definitely mistaken. It was most likely the alcohol (which they were underaged to begin with) plus some other f'ed up things going on in their heads.

I don't agree. It's the job of a parent to raise their children to be intelligent, productive members of society. Any child, any person, can be taught with the right degree of motivation and discipline.
It might not be easy to raise your kids, but that doesn't mean you can do a half-assed job or pass it off on video games or the friends they hang out with. It's your duty as a parent to intervene, sever unacceptable friendships, and keep your kids on the right track until they're out from under your roof.

What do their actions even have to do with Mortal Kombat? Did THEY say they were acting out the game? There are no excuses for beating a small child to death. Games didn't do it!

There are some kids that are just too stupid to play videogames. And then they have to do things like these. In this generation of ADD riddled, youtube addicted dumbass youth, I don't know what else I'm going to see in the future that disturbs me this much. But I hope I never have to. And the traditional remark that all gamers go back to is that parents should be doing their fucking jobs. But if your kids are this goddam stupid, what the fuck exactly CAN you do? This is just so sad. These kids won't get death but their lives mean nothing nonetheless and for the most part, they're over.

This is unbelievable. No matter how drunk I've ever been, I've never lost my humanity. I hope they're not able to use that as a mitigating circumstance. Just disgusting.

@cchrist: Wait, why should these two be forgiven? They don't regret, and shrugged it off to being drunk. Perhaps if they showed even a little remorse, maybe they'd deserve forgiveness.
But if you'd read the article, you'd see the girl Zoe was constantly neglected, constantly had bruises on her, was beaten to death, and when the boyfriend was asked he shrugged and said he was drunk. Real remorseful!
Like I said, I'm sick of degenerate fucks like this in society, getting away with shit because the system will be abused by an attorney. When they get out of prison, do you think they'll have something to offer to society? If so, I'm glad you're up for polluting society with filth like this, because these types of people don't change.

@unmarkedone:
Come on, are you serious? Its the mother's fault she trusted her 16 year old to take care of her sisters. I wish my parents trusted me enough when i was that old. Regardless of if its bad parenting or just bad eggs (bonnie and clyde types) finding each other, its highly judgemental to come out and blame the parents because they didnt raise the kids right. sometimes the kid is just fucking mental and no amount of parenting changes that

They are way too young for the death penalty. Give them 10 years, no chance for parole. It'll allow them to feel the pain for the rest of their lives, but still allow them to be functioning human beings with life left to live.

I fail to see any humor in the death of a 7 year old child.
Some of you here (you know who you are) should be ashamed at your responses.

a) the fact is they *were* acting out moves from Mortal Kombat. To say games had "nothing to do with this" is disingenuous.
b) They're 16 and 17 years old. "Maturity" doesn't enter into it. There's a reason why 18 is the age of legal adulthood; yes, it's somewhat arbitrary, but clearly most people are still kids before that age.
c) Those saying their parents should have been there are idiots. Parents cannot be around their kids 24 hours a day, nor should they be. (It's kind of difficult to prepare your child for real life if you're coddling them 24 hours a day.) Most babysitters are around the same age these kids were. Without further evidence, it's a little difficult to blame the parents here. Sure, maybe they're neglectful, but then again, maybe they were having their first night out together in 5 years... which they're as entitled to as anybody else.
d) Those calling for the death penalty are part of the problem. What we need is respect for human life here; clearly, there's not enough of that in this country. Unless your own life is in mortal danger, there is never any valid reason to take the life of another human being. All the death penalty does is continue to foster a society that's cavalier about killing.

@sadkermit:
an armed society is a society based on fear. respect for one another will give you a polite society. you dont respect a gun. you fear it.
also american crime figures prove that your society is far from polite.

Its crazy to me how people will say anything to keep from taking responsibility for a mistake. " oh i don't know i was drunk, we were imitating a game ", grow up. People not taking resp. for their actions is part of the reason games and other forms entertainment are being censored.

Interesting, the news titles on both sites mentions Mortal Kombat but not Alcohol. I hate how the media seems to "draw attention and make a profit" form cases like this one. This is far beyond what the press should be.

Ugh. People can be so fucking stupid. Jesus Christ. I've been a party to some serious drinking, but never in my ENTIRE FUCKING LIFE, even in my most senseless state, would I think harming a child is something to do.
Crap like this just makes me want to curl up into a ball and fucking weep.
And what's worse is some dipshit politician is going to take advantage of this to further his/her career.

IF anyone bothers to read the actual news reports, you'll find something even more chilling: This was not the first time something like this has happened to the girl:
"Rhonda Simonetti said she baby-sat Zoe and her twin sisters twice, for four days each time, when she noticed bruises on Zoe.
"The first time I asked her, she said she fell down the stairs," Simonetti said. "The second time, she started crying and said Lamar had been hitting her." "
Where was the mother in all this? Surely you don't leave your kid home alone with someone who was reported to have beaten her! Sure, this Lamar character is dastardly for using video games as a scapegoat for drunkenly killing a little girl, but this could have been prevented by the mother stepping in and doing something about it.
Nevertheless, I'm sure our favorite anti-gaming lawyers and politicians are going to come crawling out of the woodworks to condemn video games once again, because clearly it's the video games and not poor parenting or excessive drinking/stupidity.
I'm with everyone else in saying the two killers should somehow be stricken from the gene pool. They aren't fit to be parents, ever. Plus, why allow psychopathy to propogate?
